The roundabout — or traffic circle — is proposed for Highway 16 at the four-way intersection with Hollonville Road and the old Georgia Highway 85 Connector in western Spalding County, about a half mile east of the Coweta County line. The purpose of the open house is to provide the public with an opportunity to see the plans for the proposed project, ask questions and comment on the proposal.
The open house will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Spalding County Courthouse Annex, 119 E. Solomon St., in Room 108.
One local official already raised questions about the project during a Griffin-Spalding Area Transportation Committee meeting last month.
“It’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever seen,” said Griffin Public Works Director Brant Keller, who lives in the area of the proposed traffic circle.
“With transfer trucks going between (interstates) 85 and 75,” Keller said, “it doesn’t make good sense.”
He pointed to the roundabout in Whitesburg in Carroll County.
“Trucks drive through the middle,” he said. “It’s a mess.”
Keller suggested moving the roundabout closer to Griffin on Highway 16 at the Maloy Road intersection.
“You can see there,” he said, referring to the sight lines. “It’d make more sense.”
Those unable to attend the open house can see the plan and make comments at www.dot.ga.gov by clicking on “Information Center and Public Outreach” under the list of featured links. The project number is STP00-0000-00(409) Spalding County.
