According to an informational memorandum by the Griffin-Spalding County School System, six administrators will retire by the end of this school year in response to an incentive package offered by the school system.

The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education in November approved a recommendation from Superintendent Curtis Jones to offer all school system administrators a Voluntary Retirement Incentive Agreement (VRIA) that would pay them 20 percent of their 2011-2012 gross annual base salary in return for retiring at the end of the current school year.

The initiative came as an attempt to reduce the total number of administrative positions in the school system, which currently employs 27 assistant principals but is only funded for 16. By either filling vacant positions internally or not filling them at all, the school system will be able to cut expenses, as it faces a budget shortfall for fiscal year 2013.
