Since October, the Griffin Police Department (GPD) Explorers — a program designed to give youths between the ages of 14 and 18 hands-on experience in law enforcement — have been involved in a variety of activities.

The Explorers completed a course in fingerprinting, served in several community service projects such as the Belk fund-raiser, assisted in directing traffic during the Spalding County Fair and participated in the Trick or Treat event in downtown Griffin.

Earlier this month, Explorers had a float in the Christmas parade for the first time.

Also in December, the Explorers adopted six local families, providing nine children with a great Christmas that would not have been possible without the generous donations of clothes and toys.

Last Thursday, the group hosted its first annual Christmas party for neighborhood children, which included a meal by the GPD as well as the making of personalized ornaments and the decorating of Christmas cookies. The party even included an appearance by Santa Claus.

The GPD Explorers program lets its teenage members experience a series of fun-filled, educational activities designed to promote growth and development, as members can earn ribbons for completing classes and participating in community service projects.

The GPD thanked all those who have supported the program over time — such as Belk, Rita’s Pawnshop and the Spalding County Magistrate Office. The Explorers particularly thanked Judge Rita Cavanaugh for allowing them the opportunity to observe an actual court proceeding and then answering questions related to the judicial system.
