For the fifth consecutive year, teachers of the Griffin-Spalding County School System will receive free school supplies for their students through Norcom’s Education Celebration on Aug. 3.

The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Griffin Auditorium, and all teachers and principals in the school system are invited to attend. This year’s guest speakers are Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy and State School Superintendent John Barge.

After the celebration at the auditorium, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., teachers will get to shop for school supplies at Spalding High School. A schedule that allots a specific time period for each school to shop has not yet been announced.

During the 2010 Education Celebration, school supplies filling more than 11 tractor-trailers were handed out to educators, and Norcom Manager of Corporate Special Projects Dee Andrews said this year’s school supplies giveaway should be similar to last year’s.

Andrews said each student in the school system will receive about 12 pencils this year, each child in kindergarten and prekindergarten will get children’s scissors and crayons, and each middle and high school student will receive about 10 pens as a result of the Education Celebration. In addition, each teacher will receive half a case of copy paper.

“We have really focused on the products that the kids need,” Andrews said.

Andrews said that Norcom is still accepting sponsors for the Education Celebration, and those who are interested in joining the efforts should email her at deeandrews@norcominc.com.
