The sixth annual June Jam begins at noon Saturday.

New this year is the June Jam Marketplace and a children’s activity area, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. The Marketplace will showcase area artisans, businesses, growers, food vendors and community-service providers as well as activities for children including face painting, moon bounces, a cool zone, and games.

The Marketplace will also feature crafts and a charity cornhole toss, and will be the judging area for the junk art and cart decoration contests. At 2 p.m., prizes for these contests and the recycling essay contest will be awarded with first place getting $75, second getting $50 and third getting $25 in several age-group categories.

The junk art contest is sponsored by Pratt Industries, the cart decoration contest by the city of Griffin Solid Waste Division and the essay contest by Perkins Shibaura Engines.

Griffin’s June Jam festivities will culminate in a community street dance extravaganza, Dancing Under the Stars, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Performers this year include Griffin native singer-songwriter Emily Hearn, and Uncle Jon’s Band, a 12-piece band which plays songs from artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Dave Matthews Band, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Bonnie Raitt.

Everyone is invited to bring their own lawn chair and picnic basket, or to reserve a table (with seating for eight) for $100. Food vendors will also be on site.

The June Jam 2011 Main Stage will be at the new Park at Sixth at the corner of Solomon and Sixth streets. Presenting partners for June Jam 2011 include Griffin Downtown Council, city of Griffin, Spalding County, Liberty Technology, Affairs to Remember and Haisten McCullough Funeral Home.

Great job on leaving two presenting sponsors out that just happen to be your competitors, Kitchen Drawer and The Grip
