Griffin area executives may be “locked up” Wednesday to raise money for Jerry’s Kids.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is hosting an executive lock-up in Griffin. Local law enforcement officers will be picking up the “jail birds” and taking them to The Event Center to serve their time and to raise bail.

The Griffin Police Department and the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office are donating drivers, said MDA of Middle Georgia’s Laura West. Officers will go out with an MDA warrant to pick up local business leaders.

West, who also serves as a “parole officer” for the event, said each person is trying to raise $2,000 in bail. Participants will be allowed to use their cell phones to raise bail and will be served “bread and water” by The Event Center.

The goal for the event is to raise $35,000, and the money will stay in the Spalding County area, she said. Money raised will be used to help send patients to clinics at Emory, provide maintenance on wheelchairs and leg braces, and to pay for support group sessions and a summer camp for children.

West said a $30 donation provides an annual flu shot. A $100 donation pays for one support group session, $150 pays for one physical, occupational or respiratory therapy session, and $800 pays for one week of MDA summer camp for one child.

Money also goes to research to find cures and treatment. West said “one minute of research costs $74.”
