A day earlier, the Spalding High girls tennis team advanced to the Elite 8 round of the Girl’s Class AAA state playoffs for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in the last seven years with a 3-2 victory at Richmond Academy in Augusta.
Emily Peek at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-4), Lib Moore and Sarah Peek at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-1) and Mackenzie King and Caroline Hearn at No. 2 doubles (6-0, 6-2) scored points for Spalding (16-5 overall) which sits a win away from reaching the state semifinals for the third year in a row when it travels to take on Region 4-AAA runner-up Drew 4 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Region 4-AAA third-seeded Spalding lost 3-2 at home to Drew in the season opener on Feb. 8.
The Greg Crawford-coached Spalding Jags (16-5), trying to reach the Elite 8 for the first time in school history, ended their season in the second round for the second year in a row, for the fifth time in the last six years and for the seventh time overall in the team’s 11-year history.
Region 1-AAA champion Americus-Sumter (16-0), meanwhile, remained undefeated on the season as it advanced to an Elite 8-round match later this week.
Drake’s 6-0, 6-0 victory Tuesday came at No. 3 singles.
