Citing practice on too many consecutive days, Griffin High head football coach Steve DeVoursney opted to move the opening of spring football practice from May 9 to May 4.

“Practicing Monday through Saturday I thought would be too long to go,” he said.

Instead, the team will practice Monday through Thursday during the 10-day practice period, taking Friday off both weeks and they’ll conclude with the annual Green and Gold Game on May 19 at the GHS practice field.

SPALDING SPRING FOOTBALL GAME TO BE AT MEMORIAL STADIUM: Spalding High Touchdown Booster Club President Ronnie Owens announced Tuesday that the team’s annual Navy and Silver Game will be held at 6 p.m. May 20 at Memorial Stadium in Griffin.

Admission will be $3. The concession stands will be open and all proceeds from the concession stand that day will go to support the SHS TD Booster Club.

The Jaguars, under the direction of a new head coach — veteran Nick Davis — will open spring practice May 10 at SHS.

SHS STATE PLAYOFF SOCCER MATCH THURSDAY TO BE AT MEMORIAL STADIUM: The No. 7 state-ranked Spalding High Lady Jags’ opening-round Class AAA state playoff match at 6 p.m. Thursday against Perry will be at Memorial Stadium in Griffin.

Admission is $7 per person (this is set by Georgia High School Athletic Association). School System passes do not get you in free to state playoff games. All are asked to sit on the visitor’s side.

Region 4-AAA champion Spalding goes into the match sporting a 13-3 record, while Region 2 fourth-seeded Perry is 6-10. The winner advances to a second-round state playoff match Tuesday against the Harlem (11-3)/Westover (9-8) winner.

FCA TO HOST HERITAGE IN SUB-STATE: The Faith Christian Academy golf team is hosting an Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama Athletic Association (ICSGA) sub-state golf match Thursday against Heritage Academy from Sugar Hill, Ga. at the Griffin Country Club.

The winner advances to the ICSGA state match on May 5 at Cedar Lake Golf Club in Loganville, Ga.

GRIFFIN FOOTBALL TEAM SELLING DOUGHNUTS: The Griffin High football team will be selling doughnuts from 8 a.m. until noon on May 7 outside of Wal-Mart.
