Don’t trust those who want to disarm us

To the editor: There are people in this country who believe that Americans no longer have the right or never had the right to own guns. It goes back to the meaning of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The way the words are written leaves some doubt as to the true meaning. Anti-gun people focus on the first part of the amendment and believe that the Second Amendment meant that only members of a state militia should be allowed to possess guns. Pro-gun people focus on the last part of the amendment and believe all people have the right. What the anti-gun side is unwilling or unable to understand is that the people were the militia when the Second Amendment was written. When men were called to form the militia they brought their own weapons.

Anyone of moderate intelligence should be able to understand the gist and spirit of the words in the amendment. Another logical conclusion to support the right to possess guns was the time in history people were living. America was a vast wilderness and danger lurked everywhere. Wild animals, Indians, road bandits, drifters and opportunistic criminals were a part of daily life. People used guns for protection, to hunt wild game and put down and protect livestock. To suggest that the Founding Fathers did not intend for the people to be armed is absurd.

The mostly liberal press usually portrays the man with the gun as a criminal. Law-abiding citizens who protect their person, family or property with a gun seldom get notice. Every day in this country someone protects themselves or their property with a gun.

The country hasn’t changed that much in the last 200 years. There are still road bandits (carjackers and armed robbers) and opportunistic criminals (murderers, rapists and thieves). Americans need to be armed for their own safety. Criminals are cowards and will retreat when confronted with serious resistance. The police cannot protect everyone and usually arrive at crime scenes after the crime has been committed.

People who want to disarm America are either fools, criminals or belong to groups that have an unclear or suspicious agenda.

Buford - I have a man crush on you! You do your homework and you have earned my respect!

Listen fellow citizens, if you belong to a mainline church, you are probably giving money to folks who would rather see the USA destroyed.

Leave mainline churches folks! Don't feed the Commies that are working to destroy the USA.

Not only do they want your guns, they want your souls, claimed for their master in Hell - Lucifer!

Run! Starve the demonic "churches." Don't give them another penny!!

This is one thing I agree 100% with bbetsill. When you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns. What would you outlaw next? Knives?

While agreeing with Mr. Grimsley’s point that the American people’s right to keep and bear arms should never be infringed. I do reject his reasoning why. Contrary to popular political beliefs, the right to possess a firearm has nothing to do with hunting or any other recreational activity. The basic right to possess a gun serves a much more important function in our society: self defense. The right has two purposes: It allows individuals to protect themselves from criminals when the government is unable to protect them. Even more importantly, the right exists so that individuals can protect themselves from the government when it unjustly attacks them. In reading the Federalist Papers and the writing of Thomas Jefferson it makes this quite clear that this was their intent, "The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- (Thomas Jefferson).

The Nazi disarmed all Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto before they began systematically killing them, The same can be said about Cambodia in the 1970s when the Khmer Rouge convinced the people they no long need weapons to protect themselves because that was the job of the government less than a year later the Khmer Rouge began killing and did not stop until 30% of the population of Cambodia was dead. I could go on and list countries like Soviet Union, China, Rwanda, Indonesia, Uganda, Iran , Iraq, and The Sudan to name a few. This history teaches us why bearing arms is a fundamental right.

If you happen to be tithing to one of the church's below Methodist, Episcopal, Prebryterian, Lutheran--they all use their money--which comes from their many congregations to support gun control. Wake up America. No church has the biblical authority to keep you from purchasing a gun for your protection. How many of you reading this care enough or are brave enough to go to your church's NATIONAL website (not your local church's website) to see if they support gun control. I've taken the liberty of copying some links below for you.
