Mrs. Ella Catherine Tyus Raines, 91, passed away on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.

Mrs. Raines was born on May 24, 1919, in Griffin, daughter of the late Roscoe Edison Tyus and the late Lois Hand Tyus Cox. She graduated from Griffin High School and worked for Gossett’s Ladies Shop. She married Harry Raines on Jan. 5, 1942, and moved to Atlanta. Mr. Raines passed away in 1947. She returned to Griffin after his death and cared for her uncle and aunt, Vindex and Ethel Sibley Hand, until their deaths. She later worked for United Cotton Goods in Griffin. She was a Bible scholar and lifetime member of Griffin First Baptist Church, joining in 1931. She taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department for many years and was currently an active member of the Seekers Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Tyus Cartledge, and her brothers-in-law, Jim Williams and Paul Flynt Langford.

Mrs. Raines is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois Tyus Williams of Chester, Va., Betty Jo Tyus Langford of Griffin, Ga., Ann Tyus and John N. O’Farrell of Columbia, S.C., and Karl H. Cartledge of Macon, Ga. She was adored by 10 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; two great-great-nieces and one great-great-nephew.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2011, in the New Section of Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Bryan L. Brooks, pastor, Blackman United Methodist Church, Murfreesboro, Tenn., great-nephew of Mrs. Raines, officiating.
