Officials of the city of Griffin Water and Wastewater Division reported that 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into an unnamed tributary that flows into Potato Creek.

The Water and Wastewater Division is following all Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division requirements in regard to evaluating additional repairs that may be needed. In addition, Water and Wastewater Division officials will monitor stream conditions and issue public notices.

The city of Griffin Water and Wastewater Division Collection Division has a staff of 26 full-time employees who inspect, test and make repairs to the system which includes 220 miles of sewer lines carrying sewage to four wastewater treatment plants.

The staff is trained and certified to address any problems that may lead to sewer overflows. The city has completed sewer rehabilitation phases one through four at this time. The city has cleared, televised and smoke-tested all the sewer lines in the city, and has made many repairs.

In order to assure a timely response and proper assessment and correction by city staff, the Water and Wastewater Division asks the public for its assistance in reporting any potential sewer overflows or maintenance problems seen in the city.
