It was the third win in the last four games for Spalding (5-7), which was coming off a loss the night before at state ranked Eastside-Covington. The loss was the second int eh last three games for Luella (2-8).
The entire game was close as Luella led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, the score stood 20-all at the half and Luella led 31-29 going into the fourth.
Luella opened up the largest lead of the night, eight points, early in the third quarter, but Spalding raced back to tie the score on a shot by Matthews with just under three minutes to play in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter Luella had a 37-36 lead and the ball as the clock ticked down to :22.9 before SHS fouled. Luella missed its one-and-one. Three seconds later Matthews made both ends of here one-and-one.
Thereafter Luella missed a shot with :02 left that Matthews secured the rebound on for the victory.
Rounding out Spalding's top scorers were Amesha Lindsay with seven points and Twandalette Cotton with six.
