The holidays will be literally ignited downtown tonight with the annual lighting of downtown Griffin.

“It’s the opening of the holiday season for the downtown city of Griffin,” said Main Street Program Manager Kira Harris-Braggs.

The event will feature a performance by the Griffin High School Chorus and the lighting of the Dundee Mills Christmas tree, which has been placed on the customer-service entrance of One Griffin Center. This task will be performed by none other than Santa Claus.

“Santa will be provided by Lifesong Church,” she said.

Afterward, First Baptist Church of Griffin will provide refreshments for all event guests.

Harris-Braggs said she hopes by bringing people into downtown Griffin to celebrate the season, it will remind them that there are many opportunities for shopping there and that the Mistletoe Market will be Saturday at the Griffin Regional Welcome Center.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. and Harris-Braggs estimated it will take roughly an hour.

“We encourage people to shop and go out to dinner somewhere downtown afterward,” she said.
