J.A. Avery, S.E. Mitchell, Dock Warner, Robert Gilbert and Leonard Hines went to Atlanta to attend the automobile races.
H.I. Starr returned from Tucson, Ariz., and announced that the old red hills of Georgia were good enough for him.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Boykin and Miss Addie Haynes of Brooks were in the city en route to Atlanta to see the auto races and visit friends for a day or two.
Mrs. A.J. Perryman, of Talbotton; and Miss Lillian Nelson, of Baltimore, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Kincaid and Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Thomas for a few days.

Pvt. Evelyn M. Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. Moore of Griffin, completed the typing and clerical procedures course at the Women’s Army Corps School, Fort McClellan, Ala. Before entering the corps, Wood was employed by Stafield Motors, Atlanta. She attended Smith High School, Atlanta.
Gary D. Hearn, son of Rev. and Mrs. Herman J. Hearn of Barnesville, enlisted for three years in the Army. Hearn chose to serve with the Army Air Defense Command. Hearn is a graduate of Milner High School and prior to enlisting was employed by the William Carter Company in Barnesville.
Airman John W. Calhoun, son of Mrs. Florence Martin of Griffin, completed his initial course of Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He was selected to attend the technical school for supply specialists at Amarillo AFB, Texas. Calhoun attended Griffin High School.
Joe F. Steele, U.S. Navy, was serving aboard the US Balster, ARS No. 38 which had returned to Pearl Harbor after a four months cruise to China, Japan, Okinawa, Formosa and the Phillippines. Steele is the son of Mrs. Gaynelle Steel of Griffin. He is a graduate of Griffin High School and prior to entering the Navy he was employed in the Entomology Department of the Georgia Experiment Station.

Navy Airman Brian D. Smith, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bevil of Griffin, graduated from the Air Traffic Controller School. The 14-week course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Millington, Tenn., prepared students for future duty in an air station control tower.
Kimberly Gregory, Cheryl Ann Harrell and Vickie Smith Kelley, all of Griffin, were named to the permanent dean’s list as of winter quarter 1984 at Tift College of Continuing Education.
Susan Garrett of Griffin was honored during awards day at Middle Georgia College in Cochran for being named to the dean’s list for two consecutive quarters.
Richard Dale Gibson of Griffin received the juris doctor degree from the University of Mississippi May 19.
Patty Sanders of Griffin and a freshman at West Georgia College, was selected as a member of the West Georgia College Marching Braves Flag Corps.

Lucille and Durward Williams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In celebration of their 50 years together, their children gave a reception in their honor at Mount Gilead Baptist Church.
The Rev. Jimmy D. and Lettie Daniel celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with family. They are the parents of Jimmy Antwon, Dale Antoinette, David Anthony and Virgus Antonio Daniel.
Troy John McDaniel and Jessica Kelly McDaniel celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel have a daughter, Elizabeth Matison McDaniel. The couple were married at Orchard Hill Baptist Church.
James and Patsy Hughes celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. They have three daughters, Jamie Hughes, Becky Hughes and Holly Hughes. The couple were married by Justice of the Peace John O. Clements at the Spalding County Courthouse.

Courtney Black, 3, of Sunny Side, claimed her prize for winning the Griffin Daily News’ Prettiest Pumpkin Contest. Courtney used her creativity and painted a pumpkin silver, then added a horse and some dolls to complete the Cinderella’s Carriage pumpkin.
Darren and Ann Gates celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Yashica Caldwell and Elini Robinson. They celebrated with a night out on the town and quiet time together.
Calvin and Octeria Odom celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Rashad Odom and Latasha Odom. The couple celebrated with a dinner and a night out on the town. They were married at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Henry and Louise Queen were honored with a reception to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The reception was hosted by their daughter Sherry Jones and her husband, Mitchell and daughter, Lauren at Rock Springs Church in Milner. They celebrated with a trip to Phoenix, Ariz.
