A special train was operated from Griffin to Macon, leaving here at 7 a.m. and returning at 10 p.m., and quite a large number of Griffin people took advantage of the opportunity to go down to Macon to attend the State Fair and to see President Taft.
Quite a number of people from around here attended the State Fair in Macon and all reported a good time. Several saw Big Bill Taft and Little Joe Brown together.
The “Lion and the Mouse” was presented at the Bijou, but the stage was too small to put the play on properly.

Third Ward School was awarded a certificate of exceptional merit and placed on the National School Safety Honor Roll of the National Safety Council.
Army Recruit Tommy J. Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie C. Morgan of Griffin, completed the radio-teletype operation course at The Southeastern Signal School, Fort Gordon, Ga. He is a 1958 graduate of Griffin High School.
Miss Shirley Coggans, daughter of Mr. James Roy Goggans of Griffin, was cast in the role of the mother in Tennessee Williams’ drama “The Long Goodbye,” which was presented at Georgia Southwestern College. Miss Coggans was a freshman in the Nursing Education Department.
Mrs. Henry A. Weems and daughter, s went by plane to New York. They sailed aboard the USS Randall for Munich, Germany to join their husband and father, who was stationed there with the U.S. Army.

Six Griffin High School Chorus members participated in the All-State Chorus held at Savannah. Members of the All-State Chorus were Ronnie Andrews, Lori Stenson, Michelle Dearing, Tony Ford, Mark Preston and Dana Bevil.
Trey Williams, flutist, and Michael Goolsby, trumpeteer, presented the last concert of their high school careers in the Cheatham Auditorium of the First Baptist Church.
Julie Hammond, Griffin High School senior, was the recipient of the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) scholarship award.

Pre-kindergarten teacher Jackie Patterson used a hose to rinse the sand off her students before their snack time during their water day celebration. The Beaverbrook Elementary School children had fun playing in small pools and building sandcastles.
Cowan Road Elementary School science teacher, Esther Walston, gave cockatiel “Spike” a ride on her shoulder. Walston’s students raised the bird from an egg for a science project.
Kathleen Adams of Griffin was one of 1,500 high school seniors to be awarded one of four types of scholarships to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Adams, a student at Griffin High School, was awarded a President’s Baylor Scholarship, which provides up to $13,000 for four years.
The United States Achievement Academy announced that Justin Cropsey of Griffin had been named an All-American Scholar. He attended Griffin High School and is the son of Paul and Sande Cropsey of Griffin.

Students Lance Holden, Wade Stratton, Caroline Daniels, Lindsay Thomston and Campbell Daniels worked on the freshwater fish tank at the Program Challenge Center during Fall Family Work Day.
The Tiger Cubs Pack 2 celebrated America by learning about the flag. The Spalding High School Color Guard assisted with the presentation.
Pulaski Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution members attended the Southwest District Workshop in Macon. The members enjoyed six workshop sessions and a luncheon. Attending from Griffin were Alice Pounds, Nancy Morris, Christine Napier, Annette Mouchet and Alice Blake.
Program Challenge students enjoyed supplies donated by Mr. Hal Rahn, President and CEO of Norcom Inc., which produces and packages notebook paper, poster board, spiral notebooks, folders and envelopes. Colorful folders are used as school agendas, a means of strengthening communication between school and home.
