From the Annals of 1909

E.S. Scott, who had been a street car conductor in Atlanta for some time past, concluded that he had rather farm and would take up his abode in the western part of Spalding the following year.

W.W. Roop, J.M. Dodd, W.W. Fitts and W.S. Hubbard, of Carrollton, were in the city en route to Dublin to attend the State Baptist Convention. They were joined here by Dr. N.B. Drewry, who would represent the First Baptist Church of Griffin.

H.V. Kell, of this city, and C.R. Griffin, of Sunny Side, left for a hunting and fishing trip down below Albany.

Mrs. J.M. Kimbrough Jr., left for Fort Sheridan, Ill., to join her husband, Captain Kimbrough, who was stationed there.

The Rev. C.P. Watson of Concord received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Georgia Department of Veterans Service for his service and interest in the veterans of this section.

Seaman Apprentice Larry Cobb was spending a 14-day leave in Griffin with his family. He is the son of Mr. Henry Cobb of Griffin. Seaman Cobb had completed ten weeks of basic training, Great Lakes, Ill. Following his leave, he was to report to New London, Conn., for six months of submarine training.

Mrs. Barbara D. Jenkins, instructor of the Griffin Ballroom Club, attended the fifth Southeastern Regional Convention of Dance Educators of America at the Dinkler-Plaza Hotel in Atlanta.

Several Griffinites attended the second annual Georgia Civil Defense Association meeting held at the Hotel Dempsey in Macon. The theme of the meeting was “Local Governments in Natural Disasters.” Mrs. Sarah Betts of Griffin was president of the Georgia Civil Defense Association.

Crescent Elementary School was presented with a new school flag, designed by sixth grade student Tara Morris.

Glenn Kellum, son of Rev. and Mrs. Owen Kellum, completed his first year in the graduate school of Emory University where he was a graduate assistant in the English Department. He was pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy degree in English Literature.

Vera Lynn Kellum Sheets, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Owen Kellum, was a recipient of the Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education at the University of Illinois where she was working toward the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Language Arts and Early Childhood Education.

Debbie Anyse Blalock, daughter of Hessie L. Blalock and the late Thomas H. Blalock Sr., was named to the dean’s list for spring semester at Alabama A&M University. She was majoring in mathematics.

Brandi Marie Cleveland and Scott Thomas Hartnett, both of Griffin, were named to the dean’s list at Valdosta State University for spring 1999.

William Bonner of Griffin was among the Faulkner University students named to the dean’s list. The school is a Church of Christ-affiliated Christian university in Montgomery, Ala.

Catherine Ritchie Carter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ritchie of Griffin, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of fine arts degree from Georgia Southern University. During her senior year she was the recipient of the Betty Foy Sanders Art Scholarship, sponsored by former Gov. and Mrs. Carl Sanders.

Helen Ruth Houston, daughter of Luke and Ellen Sams Nichol of Griffin and Dr. Marcus C. Houston of Nashville, was among those receiving degrees from Rhodes College in Memphis. Houston graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in English.

The principal, Derrell Jeffcoat of Spalding High School announced that Anneka E. Reid had been named a Commended Student in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Kelly Lynn Jacob of Griffin was selected to be a resident assistant at Valparaiso University. Jacob was a junior at VU, a graduate of Griffin High School and was pursuing a major in elementary education. Her parents are Randal Jacob of Williamson and Susan Jacob of Griffin.

Kimberly Rathbun of Griffin was awarded a scholarship by the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation. The student was among 190 Georgia residents who received $457,000 in scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year. Ms. Rathbun was pursuing the M.D./Ph.D. at the Medical College of Georgia.

The second grade students at Crescent Elementary School had a nice treat when Amelia Bedelia (played by Dana Cursey) came to Crescent’s media center to visit with the second grade class.
