Davarris “D.J.” Morgan is one of the few Griffin Bears who does all his talking on the football field.

There are many characters on the Bears football team, but he is not one of them. He prides himself on being the “mature one of the offensive unit”, quietly going about his business running and receiving for the Bears.

At least he’s that way now.

“When I first made the team, I wasn’t disciplined — I would get in trouble in school and on the football field as well,” Morgan said.

It wasn’t until Morgan got his first college football letter that he began to take the game seriously.

“The Univ. of Ga. sent me a letter to come to their football camp and that made me realize that I’ve got to work,” he said.

And Morgan has put in the work. During his stellar senior season, he’s scored 9 total touchdowns in the regular season and four more TDs in the postseason.

He leads the team with three rushing TDs in the 2009 playoffs and has scored a TD in all three playoff games this year.

“I feel I understand the game a bit more now that I’m a senior,” Morgan said. “I know what everyone is doing on offense and I’ve got all the terms down pat.”

Morgan said his goal for his senior year was to improve his receiving out of the backfield and his route-running when he sometimes lines up at receiver.

He also said he needed to improve his vision on the field.

“When you’re out in open space on the field, you’ve always got to keep your head on a swivel,” said Morgan. “I’ve gotten better at that.”

Overall, Morgan is pleased with the Bears’ perfect season so far and likes having fun with his teammates. He said he has one more goal as a Griffin Bear.

“I just want us to go out with a bang and win a state championship,” he said.
