The Anthony Lewis and Trey Epperson-led Griffin Christian football team looks to extend its win streak to a school-record three in a row when it travels Friday to take on Piedmont Academy of Monticello, Ga., in GISA action.

Griffin Christian (3-1), in only its fourth year of existence, has put together a modest win streak — matching the longest in school history set last season — that includes victories of 43-36 against Mount Vernon Presbyterian three weeks ago and 26-0 against Nathanael Greene last week. In-between the Crusaders enjoyed a week off.

Against Piedmont Academy (2-2) on Friday, the Crusaders will face an opponent that is coming off a 21-7 loss to Pinecrest Academy last week. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Piedmont that included wins of 23-12 against Briarwood Academy on Sept. 4 and 37-6 Crown Academy on Sept. 11. The Cougars, which are led by first-year coach Rhett Farmer, opened the season losing 14-6 to the Gatewood School.

“They remind me of us in size,” third-year Griffin Christian had coach Kerry Phillips said of the Cougars. “They have good tackle and guard play and a freshman running back who is 135 pounds but runs the ball well on offense. On defense, they have two very good linebackers who are active.”

Griffin Christian is led on defense by linebacker Josh Robinson. He logged a team-high 11 tackles last week including two sacks. Of course, Lewis (57-529, 9 TDs rushing and 2 TDs on returns) and Epprson (60-493 and 2 TDs rushing and 1 TD on returns) lead GCHS’s potent running attack.

Last week the Crusaders were embroiled in a scoreless tie at the half against Nathanael Greene before erupting for 26 unanswered points in the second half. Phillips would like to see that second-half effort from a week ago in both halves Friday.

“In the first half we didn’t block well and didn’t get to the holes in time,” he said. “This week we’re working on getting to the holes quicker and staying on blocks longer.”

On defense, Phillips said he was pleased with the effort from last week — the team’s first shutout this season and third in school history (the others being a 49-0 win at Young Americans in 2007 and 41-0 last season at Colonial Hills). Things to brush up on this week included, “having the ends not get pinched inside… and being more aggressive on tackling.”
