Griffin Police used a Taser on a dog that charged at two officers at about 9:04 a.m. Christmas Eve.

The officers were attempting to contact the homeowner that his dog was loose and causing a neighbor the next street over to complain. Officers reportedly attempted to knock on the back door of the Melton Street residence as the resident and others seldom answer the front door.

While doing so, both officers discovered an unrestrained brown dog sitting on the back porch of the residence. Once the dog noticed the officers, it reportedly began growling and barking so the officers began walking to the front of residence, retreating from the animal.

The dog reportedly began running after both officers, displaying his teeth and continuing to growl. The officers reportedly displayed and activated their department issued Tasers, with one yelling for the homeowner to come outside and announcing herself as a police officer.

The other officer reportedly attempted to give the dog verbal commands to stay and sit, however, the dog failed to comply and charged at both officers with his teeth displayed and growling louder. The second officer reportedly deployed his Taser, striking the dog with both prongs on its left side, which caused the dog to run out of the area, taking the expended prongs with it.

The officers were reportedly unable to locate the dog to remove the prongs. They were able to notify the dog’s owner, Dennis Ray Jones, 40, of 175 Melton St., and requested his identification to issue him a code enforcement citation regarding the dog being unrestrained.

James reportedly became irate, swearing at both officers. After reportedly instructing James several times to obtain his identification and return to his front porch, police arrested him for obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

James was handcuffed, placed in the backseat of a patrol car, transported to police headquarters for processing, He was fingerprinted and issued citations for obstruction of a law enforcement officer, failure to restrain the dog and failure to inoculate the dog, then advised of his court date.

James reportedly apologized to the female officer and explained he has anger issues. He signed his appearance bond form and was released from custody.
