The Griffin and Spalding high school softball teams are in action this week as both teams hit the road Wednesday in Region 4-AAAA play.

Spalding is 3-6 overall and 0-2 in region play while Griffin is 3-6, 1-3. Both teams suffered pre-Labor Day losses Aug. 30: Spalding fell to Stockbridge and Griffin fell to Eagle’s Landing, the Lady Bears’ third straight loss.

Spalding is actually on the road for both of its region games this week: Wednesday’s game at Upson-Lee (5-4, 1-1) and Thursday’s game at Eagle’s Landing (5-7, 1-2). Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Upson-Lee’s last loss was an 8-4 setback to Stockbridge on Aug. 28. Upson is averaging 6 runs per game while allowing 3 while Spalding averages 5 runs per game and allows 9. Spalding also faces a hot team in Eagle’s Landing, as the Lady Golden Eagles have shellacked their last two opponents — including a 14-5 rout of crosstown rival Griffin High on Aug. 30. It will be imperative for Spalding to play smart and sound softball against ELHS.

Griffin should catch a break on the road Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against the North Clayton Lady Eagles (0-3, 0-1), who along with Riverdale are the only winless teams in the region. The tough assignment for GHS will be hosting the Stockbridge Lady Tigers (8-0, 3-0) Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Stockbridge and Dutchtown (4-0, 1-0) are the two undefeated region teams at this point and those two teams play each other Wednesday, so there’ll be one undefeated team left on Thursday.

The question then becomes will Griffin pin the first loss of the year on Stockbridge Thursday or will the Lady Bears add another loss to the Lady Tigers’ record? To accomplish either scenario, Griffin will have to stop a hard-hitting Stockbridge team which features twin infielders Meigan and Raigen Prunty. The twins come from an athletic family — their brother Leon played quarterback for the Stockbridge football team a few years ago and their brother B.J. is one of the current Stockbridge quarterbacks.
