Alex Engal, Jake Mathis and Evan Davis scored two goals each Tuesday night as first-place Spalding High disposed of last-place Stockbridge 9-2 in Region 4-AAAA boys soccer at Memorial Stadium.

Spalding (7-1 overall, 4-0 region) win its fourth in a row as it remained unbeaten in region play, while Stockbridge (1-6 overall, 0-6) lost its sixth in a row and remained winless in region play.

The Stockbridge Tigers scored the first and last goals of the match, the first coming 2:37 in and the last coming at the final horn.

“I was not pleased with the two goals we gave up,” said Spalding Jags head coach Scott Henderson.

Nonethless, his team quickly made the first goal seem like a moot point when Engal, assisted by Ken Hinton, evened the match nearly three minutes later and then Davis, assisted by Engal, put his team in the lead for good 15:02 into the match.

Davis, assisted by Jake Jeffcoat, then scored again midway through the half before Mathis, assisted by John Wesley, made it 4-1 with :15 seconds left in the half.

The onslaught continued 1:31 into the second half when Engal, assisted by Mathis, made it 5-1. Mackenzie Marcoux, assisted by Mathis, made it 6-1 5:49 in before Mathis, assisted by Davis, upped Spalding’s lead yet another goal 6:15 into the second half. Jalkeel Wimbush, assisted by Engal, and Grant Neel, assisted by Engal, netted SHS’s final two scores, the first 18:58 into the second half and the last with :22 left.

Spalding continues its season at 8 p.m. Friday with a match at Eagle’s Landing (4-4 overall, 4-1 region).

“We’ll find out Friday how good we are,” said Henderson. “It’s good to beat the Stockbridges and Woodlands, but we still have to face the best teams in the region.”
