The opening times for the fair, which runs through Oct. 13, are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on both Saturdays and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
Aside from the traditional rides, the fair will have a petting zoo and a blacksmith exhibit throughout the entire 10 days, according to Fair Manager Bill Wages. Also back this year, on Oct. 5, is the Special Friends Day where special needs children of the Griffin-Spalding County School System are invited to go on rides for free in the morning.
Food served at the Spalding County Fair includes corn dogs, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, barbeque, chili and hot dogs, among other things.
Residents have until Wednesday to buy a Mega Ticket for $20, which covers the admission fee to the fair and an armband that allows access to all rides for one day.
“That’s probably the best deal we got going,” said Wages, who has been fair manager since 1997.
Places to purchase Mega Tickets are the Kiwanis Club office on South Hill Street, the Griffin Welcome Center on North Hill Street, United Bank, First National Bank, Regions Bank and Georgia Banking Company.
Regular admission to the fair on any given day is $5.
Wages said that on Oct. 8, and only on that day, the fair offers dollar rides where each ride at the fair comes at $1.
Security at the fair will be provided by officers of the Griffin Police Department and deputies of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.
“They both do us a good job,” Wages said. “We are glad to have them.”
The Spalding County Fair is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Kiwanis Club of Griffin. The proceeds of the fair pay for the expenses at the Kiwanis Club’s annual Pancake Day, which in return provides scholarships to local students. Fair proceeds also fund other yearly charity events by the Kiwanis Club.
Asked what fundraising goal he has set for this year, Wages said he doesn’t want to put a number on that.
“We just hope for the best,” he said.
