The pop tabs are just part of the fund-raising for association’s 14th annual Olivia Andrews Tab Run, this Saturday. The Tab Run is a 95-mile, police escorted motorcycle ride from Griffin to Warm Springs which concludes at Pyne Road Park in LaGrange.
Entry for the Tab Run is $10 per person, which includes a t-shirt for the first 800 entrants. Registration and breakfast begin at 8 a.m., Saturday at Applebee’s in Griffin, 1647 North Expressway, with ride out at 10 a.m.
Applebee’s will open for breakfast, Tab Run organizer and founder Arnie Cobb said, with donations from breakfast sales going to the fund-raiser.
The annual ride started in 1999, when 18 participants turned in 194 pounds of tabs. Last year, more than 800 participants turned in more than 3,400 pounds in tabs.
The goals this year, Cobb said, “is to get as many riders as we can and a have a safe ride.”
The ride is named for Cobb’s niece, Olivia Andrews, who was born premature in 1997, weighing only 1 pound, 4 ounces, he said. She was rushed to the St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, which is known for its care of premature babies and his sister and brother-in-law stayed at Ronald McDonald House near the hospital while Olivia was hospitalized for three months.
At 15, she is now a healthy young girl, thanks to care received there, Cobb said. He wanted to give back a little of what the Ronald McDonald House had given to his sister and as a member proposed collecting pop tabs to the Southside Riders.
The donations, totaling $40,000 so far in the past 13 years have helped offset some of the costs in providing the “home away from home” to area families. Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable, supportive alternative for families of seriously ill children receiving care away from home, including a place for families to eat, sleep, relax and find support from other families in similar situations.
Registration and breakfast start at 8 a.m., with the ride leaving the Applebee’s parking lot at 10 a.m., toward Warm Springs, where it will pick up more riders at 11 a.m., and continue to Pyne Road Park on West Point Lake in LaGrange. There, tabs will be weighed and prizes awarded for most tabs and there will also be food, drink, music, vendors and a 50/50 drawing at the park.
