Officers of the Griffin Police Department (GPD) were dispatched to an apartment on Anne Street Saturday at about 1:15 a.m. in reference to a domestic dispute.

According to a GPD incident report, the 23-year-old female victim was waving at police in the parking lot of the apartment building as officers arrived at the scene. The victim stated that her boyfriend — later identified as 24-year-old Birzavith Benton, of Griffin — was drunk and wouldn’t leave her apartment.

When officers and the victim walked toward the apartment, Benton — who the victim described as ‘heavily intoxicated’ — came partially down the stairs in the breezeway and was yelling and cursing. He then reportedly lunged at the victim in an aggressive manner, which made the victim jump toward the officers. Benton then walked back inside the apartment.

When police entered the apartment, one officer retrieved a pair of handcuffs, grabbed Benton’s left arm and applied it around his wrist. When the officer reached for the other arm, Benton pulled away and positioned himself so as to face the officer.

After verbal commands to surrender and attempts to force Benton on the floor were unsuccessful, police unholstered a Taser and warned Benton that he would be tased if he continued to resist his arrest.

Stating that he didn’t mean to disrespect anyone, Benton then reportedly began to cry and surrendered. He was transported directly to Lamar County Jail on charges of obstruction and disorderly conduct.

Also on Saturday, at about 8:45 p.m., Griffin police responded to a residence on East Chappell Street in reference to an assault.

According to GPD incident report, the 43-year-old female who had called 911 told police that her 56-year-old husband had been assaulted. The husband explained to officers that another man, who had been staying at their residence, came into his room while he was lying down and accused him of stealing $40.

An argument started during which the other man reportedly struck the husband in the face. The fight that followed between the two continued all the way to the front porch of the residence until the female broke it up. The other man then reportedly left the scene.

The husband stated that he had some swelling in the lip and cheek area, though police noted that it was unclear whether it was a new or old injury, since Griffin police responded to the same location a day earlier, with people in the household drunk and fussing at each other.

Police officers decided not to press charges until they could get the other side of the story regarding this incident.
