Region 4-AAAA second-seeded Griffin's school-record streak of consecutive first-round state playoff victories was halted at four Friday night, 33-17, by Monroe-Albany in opening-round Class AAAA state playoff game at Memorial Stadium.

It was one of three losses by Region 4-AAAA teams on the night.

"I think our region found out it wasn't as tough as it thought it was," Bears head coach Steve DeVoursney said on WHIE 1320-AM's Morning after radio show on Saturday.

Not only was No. 5-state Griffin upset 33-17 at home by unranked Monroe, but No. 6-state ranked Jonesboro fell 26-21 at unranked Westover-Albany while Riverdale lost 24-13 at No. 6/7-state ranked Cairo.

The only Region 4-AAAA team to win was region champion and No. 4-state ranked Stockbridge which managed to get by Worth County 27-14.

*****

RANKED, OUT: Three of the Top-10 ranked teams are out of the playoffs after only one round.

They include aforementioned No. 5-ranked Griffin and No. 6-ranked Jonesboro, as well as No. 6/7-state ranked Westside-Macon which lost 43-33 at home to fourth-seeded South Effingham.

*****

UPSET CITY: The lower seeded team won five of 16 games Friday in the Class AAAA state brackets.

Not only did Griffin and Westside-Macon — as mentioned above — each lose, but so also did Region 7-AAAA runner-up River Ride 27-17 to Grady, Region 6-AAAA runner-up Carver-Atlanta 17-14 to Dalton and Region 8-AAAA runner-up Chestatee 59-46 to LaGrange.

*****

RANKED, ROLLING: Ranked teams to advance included No. 1 Sandy Creek 55-0 against Eastside-Macon, No. 2 Marist 56-0 against Gilmer, No. 3 Burke County 35-7 against Perry, No. 4 Stockbridge 27-14 against Worth County, No. 6/7 Cairo 24-13 against Riverdale, No. 9 Monroe Area 21-14 against Shaw, No. 9/10 Ridgeland 45-21 against Washington and No. 10 Carrollton 40-7 against Stephens County.

*****

SECOND-ROUND THUNDER: The best second-round games this week figure to be two in number.

The only one involving ranked teams is No. 10 Carrollton at No. 2 Marist, while the other interesting match up figures to be unranked Monroe-Albany at Burke County.

*****

LOOKING AHEAD: An intriguing state quarterfinal-round match up would pit No. 1 Sandy Creek against No. 3 Burke County if both win second-round game last this week.

No. 4 Stockbridge could also collide with the winner of No. 2 Marist or No. 10 Carrollton if it also advances later this week.
