Young Gray had a two-horse wagon load of fine turnips on the streets, which sold like hot cakes at 10 cents a bunch, the bunches weighing from 10 to 12 pounds each and there being only from two to three turnips in a bunch. Mr. Gray got the seed from T.J. Brooks and raised the turnips on his farm.
M.A. Caldwell, of the United Wireless Telegraph Company, was spending some time here in the interest of the company, and said that some time in the near future a station would be established in Griffin.
Bud Maynard, of Line Creek, was in the city to see the circus, and he brought in a long-handled gourd which he left with Cols. Flynt and Glessner to be presented to Gov. Brown in place of the one which some envious political enemy stole out of the executive office.
A special train was operated from Griffin to Macon, leaving here at 7 a.m. and returning at 10 p.m., and quite a large number of Griffin people took advantage of the opportunity to do down to Macon to attend the State Fair and to see President Taft.

Henry G. Dial, manager of the Kroger Store, on South Hill Street, was chosen district winner of the 1959 Kroger Good Citizenship award.
Miss Cynthia Newton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Newton of Griffin, was elected historian of the Shorter Players for the 1959-60 school year at Shorter College in Rome where she was a student.
James F. McLean, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. McLean of Griffin, was accepted as a pledge to the Delta Nu Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity at Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem, N.C. McLean, a junior majoring in history, was graduated from Griffin High School in 1957.
Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Montgomery of Griffin attended the Coca-Cola bottlers convention held in Atlanta. Montgomery was director of the Griffin Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

Sgt. Homer L. Moore, son of Moris S. and Clair B. Moore of Griffin was decorated with the Army Achievement Medal at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
Air Force Airman Clauton M. Clark III, son of Clay Clark of Griffin and Billie Anne Willis of Dublin, arrived for duty at Clark Air Base, Philippines. He is a 1977 graduate of Griffin High School.
Staff Sgt. Kenneth Marshall, son of Ollie M. Williams of Griffin, participated in the ninth U.S. Army Cook-Off competition held at Ft. Lee, Va. Marshall was assigned at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. His wife, Debra, is the daughter of Lucius and Naomi Horton of Griffin.
Navy Airman Apprentice Malcolm W. Hoard, son of Fred M. Hoard of Jackson, deployed on a Mediterranean cruise. He was a member of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 15 embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence.

Navy Seaman Apprentice, Nathan E. Herren, son of Roy G. Herren, Jr. of Griffin, completed the Cryptologic Technician Maintenance Course. Herren is a 1998 graduate of Upson-Lee High School in Thomaston.
Marine Cpl. Octavius R. Shivers, son of Sandra Fears of Jackson, participated in Fleet Week 1999 in N.Y., while assigned with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Shivers is a 1995 graduate of Jackson High School.
Wesleyan College student Erin McGavin of Griffin was named a President’s Scholar for the Spring semester. The daughter of John and Evelyn McGavin of Griffin, she is a graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City.
The Rev. G.A. “Graydon” and Ruby Coker Morgan of Spalding County, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. They were married in Zebulon by ordinary Luther Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan are the parents of the late Jeannette Duncan, Jimmy and Dot Morgan, and Robert and Marti Morgan, both of Orchard Hill.

G.W. Relthford of Griffin retired after 27 years of driving petroleum products throughout the southeast for Florida Rock and Tank Lines Inc. A retirement dinner was held in his honor at the retreat in Lake Blackshear, Ga.
John and Linda Calloway celebrated their silver wedding anniversary with the renewal of their vows with their families and friends. They are the parents of Shimander White and DeAngelo Calloway.
Ivan Betz of “Keeping Griffin/Spalding Beautiful” Committee presented Flynt Middle School media specialist Marsha Ann Cooper with three copies of “The Flint River.”
Main Street Players, Spalding High School and Griffin High School combined their talents to create the cast for the musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” that was performed at the Main Street Players Theatre.
