From the Annals of 1909

Mrs. John Woodward Mangham entertained with a lovely porch party with Mrs. Frank Holland, of Atlanta, as the honor guest. Two tables of bridge were played, Miss Elizabeth Harris, winning the prize, a pretty picture.

Miss Marjorie Hayes Wolcott returned home from an extended trip to Seattle, California, and other places and points of interest in the West.

Mr. and Mrs. George T. Brown went to Newnan to make that place their new home. Mr. Brown was an enterprising and competent druggist and had purchased a drug store there. While Griffin regretted giving up this young couple, they were heartily commended to the good graces of our neighboring town.

The county road hands moved their tent out to Orchard Hill to do some much needed work on the roads in Akins district.

Paul C. Kendall and Will C. Shelor Jr., pledged social fraternities at Emory University. Kendall, son of the Rev. and Mrs. E.P. Kendall of Barnesville, pledged Sigma Nu and Shelor, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Shelor of Barnesville, pledged Kappa Alpha.

Miss Annie Laura Lewis of Hampton was elected Junior Miss Georgia in state competition at Cartersville where 22 young ladies sought the title. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Lewis of Hampton.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene McConnell left for Jamaica for a week’s stay there. The McConnells were awarded the trip by Westinghouse in recognition of Mr. McConnell’s outstanding sales record at Griffin Sales and Service which he owns and operates.

Earle Childres, a 4-H member of Spalding County, showed his Berkshire hogs in the Southeastern Fair Swine Show. His Berkshire Boar won second prize in Junior Boar Class in both open and Junior Show. His Berkshire Gilt placed third in both open and Junior Show in the Spring Gilt Class. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Childres of Sunny Side.

Steve Cauley, manager of the Food Giant store in Griffin, presented certificates to Mrs. Margie Payton of Sunny Side which entitled her to $500 worth of food from the store. She was a winner in a state promotion among Food Giant Stores.

Nita Fullilove accepted a $2,000 donation from Jim Gamble, chairman of the Special Emphasis Committee of the Griffin Kiwanis Club. The donation was to help send clients of the Griffin Association for Retarded Citizens to summer camp at Camp Will-a-Way in Winder.

Christopher T. Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis N. Cook of Griffin, was named to the winter quarter president’s list at North Georgia College in Dahlonega.

Karen Mae Sudweeks, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Earl M. Sudweeks of Experiment and Donna Gwen McGuffey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max E. McGuffey of Griffin, were named to the dean’s list for winter quarter at North Georgia College in Dahlonega.

Starre Evans, a fifth-grader from Moore Elementary School, was awarded first place in the 1999 Safety Belt Poster/PSA/Essay Contest sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.

Ivan Betts from the Griffin Clean and Beautiful organization presented four students with a certificate and a monetary gift for their participation in Keep Griffin Clean and Beautiful.

Mr. Nelson’s fifth-grade class at Moore Elementary School toured the state capitol in Atlanta. The fifth-graders were studying a unit on government and how bills become law. Gov. Roy Barnes attended a photo session with the students as well as Rep. Bill Sanders from Griffin.

The Griffin Kiwanis Club President Tommie Lee presented a check for $500 to Ann Manley, coach of the Griffin High School Future Problem Solvers. She was to take the five student members of the team to the national competition in Michigan during the summer, following the team’s victory at the state level.

Patrick N. Gregg of Williamson was one of more than 140 teens to graduate from the National Guard sponsored Youth Challenge Academy located at Fort Gordon near Augusta.

Harlem Globetrotter Tyrone “Hollywood” Brown showed Moore Elementary School student Sanmika Bell how to spin a basketball on one finger. Brown visited Moore Elementary School to speak about character education.

Marine Corps Pvt. Michael D. Hammond, son of Rosemary D. and David M. Hammond of Griffin, completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2003 graduate of Spalding High School.

Wayne and Anita Allen celebrated their 15th anniversary. They are the parents of Debra and Danny Failey and Jessica Allen. The couple were married at the bride’s parents house.
