From the Annals of 1909

P.F. Phelps returned from a 10 days’ vacation spent at Buffalo, where he attended the national association of chiefs of police. He also visited Niagra Falls and other cities. He reported a good time and said the association would meet in Chicago the following year.

Miss Rossie Bell Newton entertained at a beautiful porch party especially in honor of Miss Warfield of Clarksville, the guest of Miss Page Acree, Miss Katherine Callaway, of LaGrange, and Miss Mildred Woolley, of Atlanta, the guests of Miss Addie Anthony.

One of the largest and most beautiful events of the summer season was the garden party given by Miss Aleene Newton in honor of her house guests, Miss Eula Lee Converse and Miss Ruth Converse of Valdosta, and Miss Kathleen Golden of Columbus.

The announcement cards of the marriage of Mr. Robert Towns Daniel and Mrs. Anna Woolley Parsons came as a pleasant surprise to the former’s many friends in Griffin. Mrs. Daniel found a cordial welcome awaiting her in her new home, where Mr. Daniel was very popular socially.

Gary D. Hearn, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Herman J. Hearn of Barnesville, enlisted for three years in the regular Army. Hearn is a graduate of Milner High School.

Airman John W. Calhoun, son of Mrs. Florence Martin of Griffin, completed his initial course of Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He attended Griffin High School.

Joe F. Steele, U.S. Navy, was serving a board the USS Balster, ARS No. 38 which had returned to Pearl Harbor after a four months cruise to China, Japan, Okinawa, Formosa, and the Philippines. He is a graduate of Griffin High School.

Pfc. Harold Queen arrived in Germany. He was stationed with the 104th Transportation Company in Sandhofen. He attended Griffin High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garnett Queen of Griffin.

From the Annals of 1984

The Greenery, a nursery and landscape business on Williamson Road near the By-Pass, held a ribbon cutting ceremony. Cecil Davis, R.L. Norsworthy, owners Jim and Linda Mock, Mildred Rainwater, and Ruth Martin attended.

Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Peeples celebrated their 50th anniversary. A reception was held at their home. It was given by their grandchildren, daughters-in-law, and Mrs. Judy Jones.

Karen Smith, activities director at Brightmoor Nursing Home, presented a check to Jim Smith of the Spalding County Heart Fund. The money was raised by residents and administrators during a “carnival” at the home. Brightmoor’s donation was approximately $730.

American Lung Association of Georgia board member Jack Clark of Griffin, attended open house and dedication ceremonies for the W.G. Raoul State Programming Center in Smyrna.

Army Sgt. Jeffery S. Maddox arrived for duty at Camp Humphreys, Pyongtaek-Gun, South Korea. Maddox was a squad leader assigned to the 557th Military Police Company. He is the son of Carlton D. and Mary L. Maddox of Molena.

Griffin Christian Academy’s Middle School Chorus was awarded superior ratings in the Southeast Regional Choral Music Festival for the Association of Christian Schools International. The festival took place at Calvary Christian School in Columbus.

Donnie Murray of Beaverbrook Elementary School participated in the Special Olympics Pentathlon. He was the only elementary school student to participate in the event. Donnie had scored 500 out of 500 points in the USMC Physical Fitness test, the highest score ever at Beaverbrook.

Bryan and Stephanie McCullough Jones celebrated their second wedding anniversary with a weekend out of town. Their children are Blake and Ryan. The couple were married at West Sunny Side Holiness Congregational Church.

Crystal Pendergrass of Griffin participated in the Area 6 Special Olympics Basketball Skills Competition at the Roosevelt Institute in Warm Springs. The 13-year-old was one of about 100 children from Spalding, Coweta, Fayette, Troup and Herald counties taking part.

Army Capt. Brian C. Howard graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Columbus. Howard is the son of Charles Howard of Griffin. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1977 from North Georgia College, Dahlonega.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bertum celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Ima and Mark Griffin of Griffin, Freda and Ricky Reese of Jackson, Johnny and Jenny Bertum of Griffin and Jerry and Jenny Bertum of Canton.
