Rev. W.Z. Gardner, of Orchard Hill, returned from an extended visit to Mississippi, Texas and other places in the West, and was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. G.G. Graham, of Eddy, Texas, who spent some time in this section with relatives.

H.H. Peeples, J.M. Putnam, Sam Drewry and W.H. Cox shaved off their whiskers and moustaches for the first time in 20 years.

A merry assembly of young people in Sunny Side enjoyed a delightful ice cream festival as the guests of Mrs. Annie Laurie Mitchell, who was assisted in dispensing the various pleasures by Miss Dempsie Brewster.

Prof. J. Henry Walker, Miss Nellie Corbin, Miss Corinne Walker and Miss Roy Kincaid left for Cumberland Island to attend the State teacher’s meeting.

Parks W. Colwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Colwell of Griffin, was promoted to Specialist 4 in Germany, where he was a member of the 24th Infantry Division. He is a 1953 graduate of Jackson High School.

Bruce Metzler, son of Mrs. Nellie Mae Underwood of Griffin, enlisted for three years in the regular Army. Metzler was a former student of Griffin High School.

Navy Radioman Seaman Apprentice Clifford M. Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clude M. Philips of Griffin, was serving at the Naval communication facility, Kami Seya, Japan.

Pvt. Evelyn M. Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. Moore of Griffin, completed the typing and clerical procedures course at the Women’s Army Corps School, Fort McClellan, Ala.

The Griffin Association of Life Underwriters made a donation to the Griffin-Spalding County School System for use in purchasing computers for the school. Also contributing towards the donation were the Mouchet Corp., Osmose, and Thomas Packing Company.

Members of the Spalding Junior High Unit III Band received a superior rating at the 6th District Band Festival held in Morrow. The superior rank is the highest rating possible at the festival.

Bain Proctor, president of the Griffin Volunteer Coaches Association, accepted a $1,500 check from Phillip Adcock of the Boy’s and Girl’s Committee of the Griffin Kiwanis Club. The donation was to help build a soccer field at the recreation complex behind the Griffin Water Works.

Mrs. Fannie C. Thomas was recognized for outstanding service to the Griffin-Spalding Fort Valley State College Alumni Association. Mrs. Thomas received a plaque in her honor from Mrs. Edna Lightfoot, alumni association vice president.

Blake Edward Vining, son of Rhonda and Terry Vining, was honored by First National Bank for his academic achievement. Vining was also selected as one of the 20 outstanding seniors for 1999 at Griffin High School.

Former Griffin resident Angie Dorn joined the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association as special events coordinator. She is a dean’s list graduate of Agnes Scott College with a bachelor of arts in sociology.

Jerry and Sherry Shaw celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Their children are Alicia Shaw, Leeann Shaw, Michelle Shaw, and Clint Shaw.

The Griffin Kiwanis chartered a new Builder’s Club, which was sponsored by St. George’s Episcopal Church of Griffin. Molly Garland was president of the new club.

John T. and Sandie A. Jordan celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple were married by the Rev. James H. Miller. They are the parents of John T. Jordan Jr. and Jamie Lee-Ann Jordan.

Amanda “Jill” Grant was named to the dean’s list of Gordon College. She is the daughter of Jan Grant, Dennis E. Grant and Deborah.

Griffin High School’s Regina Stephens’ Moderately Intellectually Disabled (MOID) class took a trip to the Festival of Trees in December with Gabrielle O’Shaughnessy’s class.

Vice president of the Griffin chapter of the AARP James Johnston presented a check on behalf of the organization to Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center.
