From the Annals of 1909

Rev. A.C. Smith attended the annual reunion of the survivors of the 30th Georgia regiment at Douglasville and reported a fine reunion and a most enjoyable time.

Mrs. E.A. Ware and children, Patti, Mae, Beverly, Walter, Francis and Helen, went to Rome, where they spent a month with Mrs. W.A. Wood, the mother of Mrs. Ware.

James McPherson was visiting his grandmother, Mrs. S.A. Brooks, here for a few days. His father, Dr. Oscar A. McPherson, formerly of this place, had just moved from Bainbridge to Brunswick.

Mrs. J. Lee Young and little son, of Cedartown, were spending a month at the home of Mrs. Mattie Watt on 10th Street.

Cryptologic Technician 3rd Class Elbert E. Lane Jr., returned to Iceland, where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy, after spending a 15-day leave in Griffin with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Lane.

Maj. James E. McKinley and family arrived in Griffin from Laon, France en route to Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas. They visited with their mother and grandmother, Mrs. E.L. McKinley of Griffin.

Dottie Blakely, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.T. Blakely, resumed her studies at Mt. Vernon Jr. College in Washington, D.C. She had spent the summer months studying at the University of Hawaii.

James Harrison of Jones-Harrison Furniture Company, was awarded a trip to Crystal River by the Philco Corp. for the store’s outstanding sales record of Philco products.

Marine Sgt. Charles S. Price, son of Senoia and Mary O. Price of Jackson, was awarded the U.S. Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. The award signifies honest and faithful service over a three-year period.

Jean Hopkins of Griffin, a member of a Management Games class in the School of Business at Valdosta State College, was named advertising manager for the class project. Jean was a senior at Valdosta.

Timothy Mark Moore and Kenneth P. Walker, both of Griffin, graduated from Valdosta State College at the end of winter quarter with a bachelor of business administration degree. David N. Brown, also of Griffin, earned a bachelor of fine arts.

Ben Mixon of Griffin and a freshman at Furman University was a featured vocal soloist in the university’s spring concert. The chorus toured Europe during the summer stopping in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Brian Robert Bozeman, son of Craig and Darlene Bozeman of Griffin, was named to the winter quarter dean’s list at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Mrs. Bernice P. Buchanan, the wife of Pastor W.J. Buchanan and the mother of four, graduated as Valedictorian from Beulah Heights Bible College in Atlanta.

Jennifer Bedell of Williamson, was awarded the Joel and Sara Edwards Scholarship award from Gordon College in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Polly J. Holladay and a Pike County High School graduate.

Casey Pilkenton of Griffin was awarded the John B. Gordon Leadership Scholarship award from Gordon College in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Todd Pilkenton and Gina Cook and a Pike County High School graduate.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Parks celebrated their 41st anniversary. They are the parents of Michael Parks, Marcus Parks and Eunice Ann James. Mr. and Mrs. Parks planned to celebrate with dinner and family and a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mr. and Mrs. Doug and Sue Landers celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Sarah and Steven Landers. Mr. and Mrs. Landers were married by Johnny Clemons.

Doreen Staples-Marshall accepted the Lon Touchstone Small Business Award for Hensley Office Equipment Co. Inc. at the 92nd annual Chamber of Commerce dinner. The award is sponsored by Spalding Regional Medical Center.

Mary Brittain of the Griffin Utility Club presented a donation to the Griffin-Spalding Elementary schools supporting the Accelerated Reading Program. Katie Ingles, Diane Isaacs and Natalie Wood presented a program to the club.
