From the Annals of 1909

Among the Mason of Griffin and Spalding County who went to Barnesville to attend the big Masonic meeting were Col. T.E. Patterson, J.T. Waldrop, G.W. Patrick, Joshua Hammond, W.M. Welden, R.D. Ogletree, E.O. Carden, James Collins, R.L. Welden, H.W. Parham and J.R. Lindsey.

Miss Vera Warlick was off on an extended visit to relatives and friends at Newnan and Fairburn.

Judge J.J. Flynt attended the reunion of the Confederate Veterans of Pike County at Bluff Springs and was one of the speakers. He reported a large crowd and a good time.

Mr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Wilson and little child, after a visit of some time here to Mr. and Mrs. James M. Mills, the parents of Mrs. Wilson, left for the Philippine Islands, where Mr. Wilson was stationed, being lieutenant in the Seventh Infantry of the regular army.

Donald Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Mitchell of Hampton, was released from the Army after having served six months active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Mr. Mitchell accepted an Aeronautical Engineering position in the Weight Control Group of N. American Aviation, Inc., in Los Angeles, Calif.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Larry E. Lester, son of Mrs. Louise Cauthen of Griffin, was serving with the Administrative Department at the Naval Air Facility in Monterey, Calif. He attended Griffin High School.

Technical Sergeant Edwin E. Ross was assigned to Headquarters, Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. He was married to the former Miss Rosalyn L. Jones, daughter of Mrs. Jewell Jones of Griffin.

Navy Patternmaker Fireman Apprentice James L. Howard,son of Mrs. Willie B. Howard of Griffin, was serving aboard the submarine tender USS Howard W. Gilmore operating out of Charleston, S.C.

Army Pvt. Warren S. Walker, brother of Robert T. Walker of Barnesville, completed basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J.

Army Capt. William F. Ward, son of William M. and Betty A. Smith of Barnesville, was promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of captain. He is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Marine Lance Cpl. Robert B. Dees, son of Prentice O. and Elizabeth A. Dees of Stockbridge, was awarded a Meritorious Mast while serving with 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Heliocopter Air Station New River, Jacksonville, N.C.

Army Sgt. Mary J. Lucas, daughter of Josephine and J.C. Lucas of Zebulon, arrived for duty in Goeppingen, West Germany. She is a 1973 graduate of Pike County Sr. High.

The Griffin Kiwanis Club’s special projects committee presented a medical training chair, valued at $700, to Dale Worthy, 7. Dale is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Worthy of Griffin.

Dick Brooks, the president of First National Bank, presented members of the Griffin Area Arts Alliance with shirts for the 1999 Iris City 5-K race. All the proceeds from the race went to fund the renovation of the Taylor Street Auditorium.

Heather Renee Weaver, a junior early childhood education major from Hampton, was honored by Berry College in Rome for her work in development services. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Weaver.

Marsha Leighanne Dees of Griffin was listed on the dean’s list at The Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah for winter quarter. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Dees of Griffin.

Kaye Quam of the Griffin Utility Club presented an appreciation gift to Robin Porter of the Plant Emporium. Porter helped the Griffin Utility Club with their annual fundraiser, selling Fraser Fir Wreaths.

Minister Zachery and Yolanda Holmes celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Brandi, Season and ZaCarri Holmes. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes celebrated by continuing a 19-year tradition in honor of their wedding day.

Billy and Betty Jimmerson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception and ceremony of renewing their vows at West Sunny Side C.H.C. They are the parents of McDonough and Starlett and her husband, Monty Ellis of Griffin.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Brett J. Randolph graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Ann Randolph of Griffin Randolph graduated in 2003 from Spalding High School.
