From the Annals of 1909

The work of building the new addition to the Farmer’s and Merchants warehouse was under way and was to be finished in time for the new cotton crop in the fall.

Miss Martha Drake and Miss Cynthia Ellis were the delightful young hostesses at a dancing party at the armory, with Miss Iola Wise, Miss Blanche Nisbet and Miss Mary Nisbet of Macon as guests of honor. Fruit punch ices and cakes were served during the evening.

A charming dinner was given especially in compliment to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Towns Daniel, by Mrs. Douglas Boyd, Mrs. William Garrett, Mrs. W.E.H. Searcy Jr., and Mrs. William Burns, at Camp Northern.

A delightful party was given by Miss Sarah Berry and Mr. David Berry in honor of their cousin, Miss Mary Gilliard, of Jackson. Three tables of “trail” were played, after which delicious refreshments were served at the small tables.

Miss Rubye Allen left for Emory University where she was to attend graduate school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Ms. J.C. Allen of Griffin.

Dr. W.R. Gilbert of Griffin was among those attending the first annual Southeastern Symposium and Workshop on Traffic Safety at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. Dr. Gilbert was a member of the committee which planned the event.

William Edward Ridley left for the University of Georgia where he was enrolled as a freshman. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Ridley Sr.

Miss Sandra Maddox and Miss Mary Dee Stevens left for Athens where they were enrolled as freshmen at the University of Georgia.

Griffin native Betty K. Candler was named STAR teacher at Bremen High School for the fourth time. She is the daughter of J.W. and Genie Johnson of Griffin and the late Murray Keene.

Vernay Manufacturing donated a Panasonic 3600 video recorder and 3700 video camera to Griffin Tech as well as several motors and switches.

Chief Noc-a-Homa was guest of honor at the Griffin Area Special Olympics at Memorial Stadium. The Chief had good luck and congratulatory hugs for all participants.

The March Beautification Award from the Chamber of Commerce was presented to J.R. Mabbett & Sons Company, located on the North Expressway in the old Grandma’s Pig building.

Dr. George T. Mixon received the 1999 Young Achiever award at the 36th Annual Veterinary Conference and Alumni Reunion of the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Mixon is a native of Griffin and Spalding County and practiced with Lindsey-Smith Veterinary Clinic in Griffin before moving to Kenya, East Africa, for mission work with Christian Veterinary Mission.

Kerry Sampler of Griffin was awarded the Lon Knowles Scholarship award from Gordon College in Barnesville. He is the son of Kerry and Annette Sampler and a Griffin High School graduate.

Brittany Berry of Griffin was awarded the United Bank/Joel Edwards Scholarship award from Gordon College in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey L. Berry and a Griffin High School graduate.

Angela Gail Banister of Griffin was awarded the Thomas E. Johnson Scholarship award from Gordon College in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Tony W. and Brenda H. Banister and a Grace Academy graduate.

Jimmy McGuffey, John Faulk, Bob Daniels, Sarah Perry and Bruce McKemie, also known as “The Auction Crew,” donated more than 60 bicycles to the Department of Family and Children Services to give to needy children in Spalding and Pike Counties. The group raised money to purchase the bikes through auctions. All items auctioned were donated by local businesses.

Agape Gardens celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives from the Griffin/Spalding Regional Chamber of Commerce.

St. Vincent’s Home Bed and Breakfast celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with members of the Griffin/Spalding Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Melissa Lewis of Griffin was named to the dean’s list at Andrew College for her excellent academic achievement during the fall semester.
