From the Annals of 1909

A pretty and most enjoyed lawn party was given by Master Willie Beck at his home on Poplar Street in honor of Miss Georgiana White and the members of her house party, Misses Bessie Wright, Mary Dale Robinson, Catherine Davenport and Louise Wright, all of Union Springs, Ala.

Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Redding and children of Atlanta arrived in the city to spend some time with Col. and Mrs. Robert Redding at their home on South Hill Street.

Misses Mittie and Hettie Carson, of Commerce, arrived in the city and were guests of their brother, Dr. M.F. Carson, and family, on College Street.

Judge and Mrs. Robert T. Daniel, who were married at Allentown, N.J., arrived in the city and were given a large reception by Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Daniel.

Pvt. Zenas A. Massey Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Zenas Alonza Massey Sr. of Griffin, was assigned to Fort Jackson, S.C. for eight weeks of basic combat training.

Midshipman Sidney Earl Wheeler was a student at Annapolis Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. S.J. Wheeler.

Airman 2nd Class Sammy Dawson left for San Francisco, Calif., enroute to the Philippines for 18 months duty with the U.S. Air Force.

Miss Peggy Darner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Garner of Griffin, received her diploma from the Crawford W. Long Hospital School of Nursing.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Willie M. Stroud, son of Herbert L. Hamm of Atlanta and Joyce G. Stroud of Griffin, completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center Orlando, Fla.

Marine Pfc. Paul D. Thurman, son of Gladys M. Thurman of Griffin, reported for duty with 3rd Force Service Support Group in Okinawa.

Army Spc. 5 Mary F. Cameron, daughter of James and Mary L. Alston of Griffin, arrived for duty at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Wash. She was an x-ray specialist. She is a 1971 graduate of Griffin High School.

William F. Ward, son of William M. and Betty A. Smith of Barnesville, was promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of captain. He is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse A. Tyson celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a dinner out. They were married by the Rev. Moore at the parsonage of First Assembly of God Church. They have one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Randall Clark.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian H. Merritt, son of Ralph Merritt and Bernell Merritt, both of Barnesville, left on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Ross. He is a 1995 graduate of Lamar County Comprehensive High School.

Abbey M. Whitehead of Griffin was awarded the First National Bank Scholarship award from the Gordon College Foundation to attend the two-year college in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Tommy and Glenda Whitehead.

Monica Atha of Hampton was awarded the Frank Jolly Scholarship award from the Gordon College Foundation to attend the two-year college in Barnesville. She is the daughter of Mark and Vicki Holmes and David Atha.

Griffin native FA (SW) Stanley Atkins II was proudly serving in the U.S. Navy. Stanley graduated from Griffin High School and completed basic training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Stanley is the son of Stanley Atkins Sr. and Chiquita Farley Johnson and the stepson of Angela Ogletree.

Atkinson Elementary School students celebrated the World’s Fair right in their own building. First grad students visited a market in Jamaica.

As Taylor Street Middle School’s pep rally celebrated the end of the first semester, Mrs. Pruitt gave pointers as students took a half-court shot. Cynthia Anderson dropped by to watch the festivities and sixth-grader Warren Dewberry, one of the winners, got his prize.

The Rotary Club of Griffin provided all eighth-grade students in Spalding County with their very own dictionaries.
