From the Annals of 1909

One of the largest and most beautiful events of the summer season was the garden party given by Miss Aleene Newton in honor of her house guests, Miss Eula Lee Converse and Miss Ruth Converse, of Valdosta, and Miss Kathleen Golden of Columbus.

Mr. John Mills complimented Miss Aleene Newton and her house guests with a delightful picnic. Quite a number of young ladies and gentlemen drove out to Corbin’s Pond, where the delicious luncheon was spread picnic fashion and the occasion was one of much enjoyment.

Mr. Lee Dearing, the mail carrier on rural route No. 5 out from Griffin, was happily married to Miss Essie Smith, a charming and popular young lady of Hampton. They had the best wishes and hearty congratulations of their many friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strickland, Miss Hattie Head and Mr. and Mrs. Hendley Kell left for Alaska. They also went on an exposition at Seattle, visiting other western cities, and took a trip through parts of California.

Army Spc. 4 Freddie A. White was assigned to the XII U.S. Army Corps (Reserve) Headquarters in Atlanta. Specialist White attended Griffin High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. White of Griffin.

Army Pvt. Phillip A. Smith, son of Mrs. Nannie M. Buchanan of Griffin, graduated from the 82nd Airborne Division Jump School at Fort Bragg, N.C. He is the son of Robert A. Smith of Forsyth and attended Griffin High School.

Jim Pridgen of the Jim Pridgen Hardware in Griffin was awarded a third place prize of $500 in a sales campaign sponsored by Beck and Gregg Housewares. Pridgen was one of the 150 dealers across the nation who participated in the promotion.

Mary Riggins of Griffin was named to the dean’s list at West Georgia College for summer quarter.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Campground, seven miles west of Griffin at Zetella, celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Willie T. Dunn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception given by their children Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Dunn of Griffin and Miss Ann Dunn of Griffin. Approximately 150 guests attended the reception.

All nine of the Spalding Junior High III entries placed in competition at the regional science fair at Stockbridge. First place winners were Robert Oetting, Angie Waller, Ross Renolds and Elizabeth Isaacs. Second place winners were Natalie O’Neal, Sandra Bullard, and Chuck Cruse. The third place winners were Joy Cook and Benie Colvin.

Navy Fireman Recruit Robert L. Brown, son of Louise Brown of Griffin, completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego.

Travis and Virginia Chambers James celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary with a weekend trip to Biloxi, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. James were married in Moreland, at the home of the bride’s parents. Their children are April James O’Try, Dennis James and Clifford James.

Dorothy Phillips was chosen the 1999 winner of the annual Ms. Brightmoor pageant at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Spalding County. The pageant is sponsored by the spiritual aims committee of the Kiwanis Club of Griffin.

Ed and Flo Burgner Lynch celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception given by their children at Decond Baptist Church in Griffin. Their children are Peggy and Don Mozley of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Sue and Chuckie Woodcock of Collins and Scott Lynch of Marietta.

The Rev. Winston H. and Joyce Hightower Harmon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception given by their children. Their children are Henry and Trish Harmon of Nashville, Tenn., Cheryl and Bill Weldon of Snellville and Regina and Rodney Cheek.

The Griffin-Spalding Republican Women donated stockings to the Salvation Army. Included were Nancy McCollum, Loretta Johnson, Diane Boyle, Laurel Brewer, Grace Doughtery, Sheila Smith, Betty Taylor, Ruth Yates and Diane Bray.

R.L. “Skeeter” and Ruth Norsworth of Griffin celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Terri and her husband David Huddleston, Angie and her husband, Tad Chisom and Kim and her husband, Jeff Sliger.

Jim and Virginia Hall of Griffin celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. The Halls are the parents of three sons, Jim Jr., Steve and Eddie.

Leonard and Doris Phillips celebrated their 36th wedding anniverary. The Phillips were married in St. Louis, Mo. They reside in Griffin. They are the parents of Tyrrell Phillips.
