From the Annals of 1909

E.P. Shannon, who had the misfortune to get hurt by a mule running away, several days later was able to be out again, as jolly as ever.

J.W. Lynch, who had been spending several months here with his father, R.W. Lynch, left for his home in New York City. He held a position as electrical engineer on a boat line on the Hudson River.

Mrs. A.C. Smith of Monroe County, who had been spending some time here with her daughters, Mrs. W.B. Griffin and Mrs. E.P. Hunt, went over to McDonough, where she was visiting her son, Col. E.M. Smith, and family.

Sun Brothers Shows gave two very creditable performances for a small circus at East End Park, through the attendance was small, the country folks being too busy on the farms to come to town, and it didn’t look like circus day on the streets. Those who did attend, however, seemed to be very well pleased with the show.

Army Pvt. James E. Huckaby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jessee A. Huckaby of Griffin, completed eight weeks of advanced individual armor training at Fort Knox, Ky. A 1956 graduate of Griffin High School, he was employed by the Southern States Equipment Corp. in Hampton before entering the Army.

Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Hardwick of Experiment received word that their son, Yeoman 1st Class William H. Hardwick was being transferred from the U.S. Naval Center, Bainbridge, Md., to Ankara, Turkey.

Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Cecil A. Colbert and son Tony, returned to their home in Manassas, Va., after a ten day visit with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Colbert of Griffin and Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Thornton of Jackson.

Kimsey Roland McKinley of Griffin received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia State College in Atlanta. Mr. McKinley received the degree with a major in accounting.

Navy Fireman Apprentice Michael L. Berry, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.M. McCullough of Barnesville, reported for duty aboard aircraft carrier USS Midway, operating from Yokosuka, Japan. Berry is a 1982 graduate of Lamar County Comprehensive High School.

Navy Airman Kenneth R. Friedli, son of Mark E. and Beverly K. Friedli of Griffin, completed Aviation Enlisted Aircrew Training School. Friedli is a 1983 graduate of Griffin High School.

Pvt. Robert R. Cloud Jr., son of Robert R. and Sylvia M. Cloud of Hampton, completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Army National Guard Pvt. Charles R. Stephens, son of Mildred and Austin Harris of Griffin, completed an army food service specialist course at Fort Dix, N.J.

William Colvin of Griffin was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Main, where he was a junior.

Alysia Joy Hollis of Experiment received the Outstanding Minority Scholarship from Queens College in Charlotte, N.C.

Keri D. Droegmiller, a junior psychology major from Griffin, toured four states as part of the Augustana Choir with the Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.

Leah Brannon and Portia Willis, both outstanding students at Flint River Technical Institute in Thomaston, were honored at a graduation luncheon held at the school.

Israel Thomas and Mary Brooke Martin, students in Mrs. Sally Brake’s kindergarten class at Orrs Elementary School, made a patterned chain to decorate their classroom for Christmas.

Harvest Christian Academy dedicated Sept. as “Celebrate America” month. Activities included a patriotic dress-up day, special lunches, fun class projects, a creative writing contest, classroom decorations, and special chapel sneakers.

The Jordan Hill Elementary students who sold the most in a fund-raising were rewarded by a fun limo ride (provided by Lake Limousine Service) and lunch at Cici’s Pizza.

Students in Mrs. Mallett’s fourth-grade class at St. George’s Episcopal School participated in a simulated archaeological midden dig. Artifacts from the past were excavated, documented and placed in a museum for discussion and research purposes.
