From the Annals of 1909

M.L. Connor resigned his place as bailiff and accepted a position at English’s pool room. The appointment to fill the vacancy was to be made by Justice T.R. Mills and here were several gentlemen seeking it, being Thomas Mallory, J.D. Holman and R.S. Ison.

Bartlett Searcy was the delightful young host at a much enjoyed dinner party celebrating the 11th anniversary of his birthday. The centerpiece for the prettily arranged table was a large bowl of violets on a lace mat outlined with smilax and the guests for the occasion were Douglas Boyd Jr., Gary Westbrook, Charles Hammond, Emory Searcy and William Searcy.

Mrs. H.S. Watt entertained with a lovely dinner in honor of Rev. and Mrs. George Hendree Harrison, of Ocalla, Fla., who were her house guests, and Mr. Albert Nelms, of Houston, Texas. The table decorations were of pink roses and a delightful menu was served.

Miss Nellie Kiser Stewart entertained at a bridge luncheon at her home on Juniper Street, in honor of Mrs. William C. Burns, of Griffin, who was Miss Louis Dixon, a daughter of Thomas Dixon of New York. Mrs. Burns had a great many friends in Atlanta; as she was a school mate of Miss Stewart’s at Lucy Cobb, in Athens, and a number of other Atlanta girls.

Navy Seaman Ernest M. Giles Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Giles of Experiment, serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Helena, participated in the West Coast’s annual Sea Fair Parade.

Navy Seaman Billy E. Pitts, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Pitts of Griffin, serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Helena, and Storekeeper 2nd Class Frederick E. Haisten, son of Embry A. Haisten of Griffin, serving aboard the guided missile ship USS Norton Sound, participated in the West Coast’s annual Sea Fair Parade.

BT2 David A. (Butch) Hubbard, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Hubbard of Griffin, was serving aboard the USS Valley Forge.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Johnny E. Pierce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester G. Pierce of Griffin, serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge, completed a four-day visit to San Francisco, Calif., with the U.S. First Fleet.

Navy Fireman Todd S. Edwards was selected as sailor of the month aboard the missile destroyer USS MacDonough, homeported in Charleston, S.C. Edwards is the son of John E. Edwards of Hampton.

Carlos F. Holcomb was promoted to corporal while serving at Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. He is the son of Paul E. and Janet E. Holcomb of Griffin.

Navy Seaman Recruit John W. Giddens, a 1983 Griffin High School graduate, completed training at the Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Marine Lance Cpl. Robert G. Daniel, son of Thomas and Judy Daniel of McDonough, reported for duty with the First Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on Okinawa. He is a 1981 graduate of Henry County Senior High School.

Mary Melissa Gardner was named the system level winner for the Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition. She was presented a certificate by Taylor Street Middle School Principal Tom Ison. Gardner was a seventh-grade student at the school.

Flint River Academy’s board of trustees named Angelo DeVivo Jr. as headmaster. He earned his bachelor of science degree in education in 1966 and his master’s of education in administration and supervision in 1974 from Valdosta State University.

Cade Joiner, son of Joe and Sharon Joiner of Griffin, was elected president of the Georgia Association of College Republicans. The University of Georgia sophomore, thought to be the youngest person ever to hold the position, worked as an intern for U.S. Rep. Mac Collins, R-Hampton the prior year. Joiner is a 1997 graduate of Griffin High School and was class valedictorian.

Dr. Gerald Arkin, assistant dean at the University of Georgia at Griffin, presented an award to guest speaker Dr. Ed Kanemasu during a celebration that included descriptions, artifacts and cuisine from many Asian countries.

Club President Sylvia Hollums presented a Legion of Honor plaque to Kiwanis of Griffin member Ronnie Masey for 35 years of service in the Kiwanis of Griffin club.

Bank Street Cafe on Hill Street in downtown Griffin, celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Griffin-Spalding Regional Chamber of Commerce. The owners are Roan Berry, Todd Davis, Mike Johnson and Chuck Johnson.

Kiwanianne special projects chairwoman Jane Tarleton and Kiwanianne board member Eleanor Grice presented The Salvation Army Capt. Patty Harris and Capt. Roy Harris approximately 30 stockings they stuffed for local needy children.
