Talk about financiers. The Monroe Advisor said the finest in the world were the wives of the men earning $1.50 a day, who raise, feed, clothe and educate anywhere from four to 10 children on it. Pierpont Morgan wasn’t in the same class with them as financial managers.
Whitewater Church, near Brooks, had been thoroughly repainted and repaired and blinds put on it, at an expense of $150. It was one of the largest country churches in this section.
Since Atlanta had got a new pump, they had taken the “big head” so bad that hair cuts had gone up to 35 cents.
George J. Coppedge made some decided improvements at his home on West Broadway Street, adding several new rooms and a new roof. He also repainted his residence and put in a big bay window in the front part of the house. The improvements cost several hundred dollars.

Mrs. John E. Burt Jr., of Macon, the former Miss Mary Jim Williams of Griffin, received her Master’s Degree from Mercer University. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Williams, her uncle Mr. Mark Drewry and Mrs. Harvey Hale and Mrs. John H. Baker of Zebulon, attended the graduating exercises.
James T. Gresham of Griffin was among the 450 collegians who attended Signa Chi fraternity’s 12th annual Leadership Training Workshop at DePauw University.
Tony R. Wilkie completed two years service in the U.S. Army. He was at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Wilkie of Griffin. His wife is the former Miss Theo Lindsey of Griffin.
Mrs. Thelma F. Davis, first grade teacher at East Griffin School attended a joint meeting of the Advisory Council of the Northeast and Southeast Regions of the NEA Dept. of Classroom Teachers in Washington, D.C., at NEA Headquarters and the Burlington Hotel.

Army Pvt. Willie G. Mayes, grandson of Ruth E. Mayes of Griffin, arrived for duty in Wuerzberg, West Germany. Mayes is a 1984 graduate of Griffin High School.
Riley C. Shelnutt, son of Carl T. and Ruby Shelnett of Newnan, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. His wife, Marcelle, is the daughter of Earl R. Milner of Barnesville.
Navy Seaman Recruit John C. Dukes, son of Jean E. and John C. Dukes III of Barnesville, completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Marine Staff Sgt. Marvin L. Taylor, son of Josephine Taylor of Griffin, reported for duty with the Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Taylor is a 1972 graduate of Griffin High School.

Christopher C. Statham, son of Alvin and Opal Statham of Griffin, was named to the dean’s list of Vanderbilt University of Tenn. Statham earned a 4.0 grade for the fall semester while in the graduate program.
Raymond and Linia Gray celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary with their family. They were married in Thomaston by the Rev. Amos Wade. Their children are Kathy and Mike Williams, Linita and Rick Pike and Rebecca Smith.
Paul and Sandra Bunn Maddox Sr. celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary. Their children are Becky, Jeff, Paul Jr. and Larmonica. Mr. and Mrs. Maddox were married in Spalding County.
Roderick and Ophelia Jester celebrated their first wedding anniversary. They were married at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Minister Jimmie and Cynthia Phillips celebrated their sixth anniversary. They are the parents of Quantrelis, Daenett, Carnell, Clinton, Derwin, and Garrick. The couple celebrated with a quiet evening together with a nice dinner at the Garden Patch in Barnesville and a movie.
Lee and Olene Byous celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple were married by the Rev. Gordon Wood at DeVotie Baptist Church. They are the parents of Stephen Jackson Byous of Silver Spring, Md., and Robert Dan Byous of Brooks.
Henry and Shirley Humphrey celebrated their fifth anniversary. They are the parents of Rodney, Marcus and Reginald Smith. The couple planned to celebrate with a quiet evening out with a dinner at Golden Corral.
