From the Annals of 1909

Miss Ellie Brewer, who held a position as stenographer in the office of Judge John P. Ross in Macon, came up for a few days visit with homefolks in this city.

Walter H. Beeks, of Macon, was in the city, the guest of relatives. He was a former Griffin boy who was making quite a success in railroad circles in the Central City.

Mrs. R.L. Williams and Mrs. J.W. Gresham spent a day or two in Barnesville. They went down to attend the exercises at Gordon Institute on account of “Founder’s Day” of that popular school.

Mrs. L.P. Jamerson and little child went to Jackson, where they were spending a few days with relatives. They were accompanied by Miss Alice Watkins, sister of Mrs. Jamerson, who had been spending some time in Griffin.

Tech. Sgt. Gene L. Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Murphy of Griffin, was assigned to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, after returning from Naples, Italy, where he was an Administrative Supervisor in the Intelligence Division.

Navy Seaman Ernest M. Giles Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Giles of Experiment, serving aboard heavy cruiser USS Helena, took part in a full-scale Naval review and visit to San Francisco, Calif., after completing a major exercise held off the Calif. coast.

Navy Seaman Walter Miller, husband of Mrs. Mary Miller of Griffin, serving aboard attack aircraft carrier USS Midway, took part in a full-scale naval review and visit to San Francisco, Calif., after completing a major exercise held off the California coast.

Pvt. Harold Queen arrived home to spend a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Queen of Griffin. After the leave he reported to Fort Dix, N.J. and then was sent to Germany.

Griffinites receiving degrees from West Georgia College at the end of fall quarter were Shari A. Barkley, B.S. in computer science; Elizabeth Killingsworth, M.Ed. in media; Catherine C. Pursley, M.Ed. in secondary education; and Mary L. Stutes, M.Ed. in early childhood education.

Susan A. Williams, daughter of Ed and Rachel Williams of Griffin, was named to Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Gayle Royals of Griffin was selected as a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities for Tift College. Mrs. Royals, an early childhood education major, was a senior and the wife of Randy Royals.

Dexter R. Whitlock, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Whitlock of Brooks, was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at North Georgia College in Dahlonega.

Jeffery Bulter, a member of Troop 8, received the rank of Eagle with the Boy Scouts of America. He is the son of Larry and Lynn Bulter. Troop 8 is sponsored by Sunnyside United Methodist Church. Jeffery was a senior at Griffin High School, an honor roll student and commander of the Jr. ROTC Rifle Team.

Gary Davis of Griffin, a representative of Modern Woodmen of America was named to Modern Woodmen’s 1998 President’s Club, a distinction indicating highest achievement in life-insurance sales.

Capt. Paul R. Schmutzler, Commanding Officer of B Company, 1st Battalion, 121st Mechanized Infantry in Thomaston, was presented with the William Few Award for outstanding commitment to duty, honor and country.

Dana R. Morris of Brooks was named to the dean’s list with honors for the fall semester at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Morris is the daughter of Danny and Gail Morris of Brooks.

Judge Tommy Hankinson of the Griffin Judicial Circuit swore in Ben Sessions of Thomaston at the Spalding County Courthouse. Sessions is associated with the law firm of Beck, Owen and Murray in Griffin. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in May, 2004.

Madison Nobles, dressed as a lion, won the sixth annual Griffin Flea Market Art & Craft Center Halloween costume contest.

Benson and Martha Hilley celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated with a traditional Red Lobster dinner. The couple were married at Providence Baptist Church in Williamson.

Gene and Ora Betsill celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Cheryl Veal, Bonnie Betsill, Tommy Betsill and Lisa Stanfield.
