From the Annals of 1909

The Mystic Circle was charmingly entertained by Mrs. J.W. McWilliams at her suburban home. The guests were received in the drawing room, which was full of the fragrance of violets and white Roman hyacinths, then invited by the gracious hostess upstairs into the Japanese room where the decorations of ferns and yellow daffodils were most effective.

The dinner given by the U.D.C.’s for the benefit of the monument fund was largely patronized and a neat sum realized.

C.L. Willoughby, dairyman at the State Experiment Station, attended the 14th annual meeting of the Georgia Dairy and Livestock Association in Madison. Mr. Willoughby was secretary of the association.

Judge E.J. Reagan, of McDonough, was in the city on his way to Forsyth, where he was holding Monroe superior court. He was joined here by Col. Searcy, the court stenographer, Col. W.E.H. Searcy Jr., and Col. Lloyd Cleveland. Judge Reagan seldom wore an overcoat, for no man disliked to wear one more than he, but he was “obliged” to don a heavy wrap and he was wearing it when he got here, causing much comment from his Griffin friends.

Capt. Howard Wallace was called for two weeks of active duty to Fort Gordon, Ga. He was captain in judge advocate generals department.

Lynn McNeely, Jaye Scott, Brenda Conkle and Ellen Austin of Girl Scout Troop 101 were spending two weeks at Pine Valley Camp at Pine Mountain, Ga.

Pvt. Merrill E. Carter, stationed at Ft. Ord, Calif., returned to California after visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.O. Carter, and other relatives in Griffin.

Two North Georgia College students from Griffin made the dean’s list for Spring Quarter. They were cadets John W. Elrod and William Eugene McConnell.

Otis Blake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis E. Blake of Griffin, escorted Lori Black of East Point on the Woodward Academy homecoming court. Blake and Miss Black were both seniors at Woodward Academy. Miss Black was named Maid of Honor.

Andrew Blake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Blake of Griffin, was named a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist at Woodward Academy.

Winners of the Great American Book Fair Poster Contest at Spalding Junior High I were Wesley Phillips, first; Corliss Williams, second; and Sharon Eppinger, third.

Miss Laura Gregory’s second grade class at Orrs Elementary School were the top class sellers for a PTO cheese and sausage sale. They and their teacher were awarded a prize for their efforts toward the PTO’s fundraising efforts.

Kiwanis Club President Tommie Lee presented a $3,020 check to Jack Sears, executive of the Flint River Council of Boy Scouts. The check was to be used to sponsor the handicapped in all of the scout units in Spalding County.

Marine Pvt. Phillip E. Maddox, son of Phillip and Christine Maddox of Milner, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 1998 graduate of Lamar County Comprehensive High School.

Navy Fireman Kenya Whitehead, daughter of Annie L. Whitehead of Griffin, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 1998 graduate of Griffin High School.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Van A. Hendley, son of Johanna C. Johnson of Hampton, completed a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian oceans and the Arabian Gulf, which included participation in Operation Desert Fox against Iraq. He is a 1985 graduate of Henry County High School.

Matthew Alexander Rahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Rahn of Griffin, received his bachelor’s degree in English at the University of the South.

Cowan Road Elementary School student Samad Ali received the Recitation Award from the School Literacy Days Competition and also received a National Language Arts Olympiad Award.

Joshua Benjamin Howell of Jackson was named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. He was attending Gordon College and was nominated by Karen McCarron. He is the son of Alan and Sharon Howell of Jackson.

Mr. and Mrs. William Hillhouse celebrated their first anniversary. The couple were married at Kincaid United Methodist Church by the Rev. Pat Looper.
