From the Annals of 1909

W.H. Hartman, the new superintendent of the light and water plant and sewerage system, arrived from Thomaston to assume his new duties. J.W. Hammond, the efficient superintendent for several years past, became associated with the new plumbing business of the Gresham Manufacturing Company.

On Christmas day, at noon, Mr. John Woods Hammond was the delightful host at an egg-nog party given in honor of Mr. Rockwell Nall and Mr. John Clark Brooks Jr. The house was beautifully decorated with ferns, other handsome growing plants and bright red Christmas bells.

One of the most enjoyable occasions of the holiday season was an elegant old-fashioned Christmas dinner given by Mr. Young Gray at his lovely country home near Grays Crossing. The house was most attractively decorated with wreaths of holly with its bright red berries, festoons of bamboo above the windows and doorways, and quantities of red bells.

Miss Sara Malone entertained her Sunday School Class with a much-enjoyed candy pulling.

Linda Lu Wynne of Griffin, a student at Emory University in Atlanta, was named to the dean’s list for spring quarter. Miss Wynne is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Wynne of Griffin.

Clyde Eldridge of Barnesville returned after representing the Gordon Military College Key Club at the International Convention in Toronto, Canada. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Eldridge.

Nicky Ballard was awarded the Zebulon Woman’s Club Citizenship Medal for her outstanding record at Zebulon Elementary School for the 1958-59 year. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.Y. Ballard of Williamson.

Sheriff J. Aster Riggins and revenue officers raided and destroyed 31 stills in Pike County during the first half of 1959. They destroyed 220 gallons of whiskey and 22,130 gallons of mash.

Christopher Todd Perkins of Griffin was initiated into the Samford University chapter of Phi Alpha Theta International honor society in history. Perkins is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Perkins.

David Kimble of Griffin, a student at Georgia Southern College, was selected in the annual GSC Programming Contest to represent the student chapter of the association for Computing Machinery (ACM) at the Southeastern ACM Programming Contest in Gainesville, Fla.

Jennifer Denise Moyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Moyer and Monica Lee Brandon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brandon, pledged Phi Mu Sorority at the University of Georgia.

Charles Thomas Bartholomew and Karl Jackson Greene, both of Griffin, completed requirements for a bachelor’s degree at Auburn University.

Marine Sgt. Christopher L. Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wilson Jr. of Griffin, participated in hurricane relief efforts in Central America while assigned to Combat Service Support Detachment 69, deployed from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Hugh Canterbury, advanced placement psychology teacher at Griffin High School, was appointed a faculty consultant to the 1999 Advanced Placement Reading, a program for college faculty and AP teachers to collaborate and exchange ideas.

Shelby Rainey, a junior from Griffin, was one of 17 students selected to serve as a student ambassador at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.

Wade White, a fourth-grader at Beaverbrook Elementary School, recycled 12 feet, 11 inches worth of newspapers for his class at school. His class, Mrs. Coates’ class, Mrs. Samples’ fifth-grade class and Mrs. Duncan’s third-grade class were the “Recycling Champs” for the third six weeks.

Futral Road Elementary School students walked around the bus lanes to earn more laps for the Mileage Club. The physical education teacher Carrie Beauchamp started the program to help prevent the propensity for students to become overweight or obese.

Jason and Kacie Hoard celebrated their fifth anniversary. They were expecting their first child, a baby girl, in December. The couple live in Griffin and are members of North Point Community Church in Alpharetta.

Frederick and Chaquida Farley celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Ikeria and Keumbra. The couple were married at Oak Grove Church. They celebrated with a dinner and an anniversary party.

Donnie and Tammie Sanders celebrated their fifth anniversary. They are the parents of Devin Sanders, Sulton Summerfield, Ben Summerfield and Brandy Brooks. The couple celebrated with their children on a camping trip to West Point Lake.
