Hon. J.O.A. Miller, of Sunny Side, county school commissioner, was in the city and stated Tax Collector Nutt and himself had collected $900 local tax for school purposes — $500 from the railroads and $400 from the people. This was the first special tax collected under the McMichael law and was used for school purposes in the seven militia districts of Spalding County.
Mrs. Bass Nichols was the delightful hostess when she entertained the members of the Domino Club and a few friends at her apartments on North Hill Street. Graceful ferns were used effectively with great clusters of narthesis, white Roman hyacinths and quantities of red camelias throughout the reception rooms.
Mrs. Clark Brooks entertained informally but very delightfully at a spend-the-day party at her lovely suburban home. Vases and bowls of roses were in all the rooms. Covers were laid for six and a beautiful dinner served. In the afternoon some of the neighbors were invited to join the guests and dainty refreshments were served.
Miss Etta Parks, of Zebulon, after spending a few days here with friends, went to Milner on a visit to her brother, H.P. Parks, who had moved here from Athens.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Graefe of Griffin left for a sightseeing trip to Ireland and Scotland. They took a North Cape and Baltic cruise, then traveled to London.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Williams and daughter, Jan, returned home from a vacation in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Tampa, Fla. Miss Jan Williams returned home with the mumps and was confined to her bed.
Mr. Carl Kueffer, Griffin National Advisor for the National Chiropractic Association Committee on the Physical Fitness of Youth, addressed the 64th Annual Convention of the National Chiropractic Association at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago.
Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Bassett and girls of Thomaston, Elizabeth Christmas and Altheda Gilleland of Griffin, spent a week in St. Petersburg, Fla., on vacation visiting relatives. While on their trip, they enjoyed swimming and deep sea fishing.

Jan Tant and Carol Dingler of the Spalding Family and Children Services Department accepted a check from Kiwanis President Ron Lane as well as gifts to be distributed to foster children here.
Dale Wilson was named the new director of the Griffin Community Workshop and also the assistant executive director of the Griffin Association for Retarded Citizens (GARC). Mrs. Lynn Leaptrot was named assistant director of the Workshop in addition to her responsibilities as rehabilitation coordinator.
The Griffin Christian Women’s Center took top honors in the annual Christmas Parade, winning first place for their float. Second place went to Meriwether Street Church of God, third to Brownie Troop 8, and honorable mention to Brownie Troop 225.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Daniel celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple’s family gave them a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Jenkins of Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel also received a congratulatory note from the White House signed by the President and First Lady.

Griffin Rotary Club donated $1,200 to the Griffin-Spalding County School System. The money was donated to help buy supplies for distressed students in elementary schools.
Dr. Bob Hayden with the Iris Chiropractic Clinic held patient appreciation day. All chiropractic services were administered free of charge with the donation of a toy or cash to Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center.
Christi D. Deason of Griffin was named to the Carson-Newman College dean’s list for the fall semester.
Named to the fall semester dean’s list at Valdosta State University were Brandie Marie Cleveland and Scott Thomas Hardnett, both of Griffin.

Donna York, Chief Operating Officer for Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council, accepted a $5,000 check from Bob Glinke, Griffin Facility Manager at Caterpillar, Inc. The donation from Caterpillar was for the council’s ongoing capital campaign for improvements at Camp Pine Valley in Meansville.
Casey Durham of Griffin was selected to receive the Georgia Military College State Service Scholarship for 2004-2005. She is a graduate of Spalding County High School.
Brent Douglas Hutchison, son of Dr. Michael and Manda M. Biddle of Griffin, and Mr. Larry and Geneva Hutchison of Paris, Ky., received his Juris Doctorate Degree from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta.
Joseph McCain of Griffin was selected to receive the Georgia Military College State Service Scholarship for 2004-2005. He is a graduate of Griffin High School.
