From the Annals of 1909

Col. Y.A. Wright, of Jackson, entertained the members of the bar of that city with a possum supper, which was reported by visitors as a most enjoyable occasion. Among those present were Col. Wright, Col. W.E. Watkins, Col. H.M. Fletcher, Col. C.L. Redman and Col. O.M. Duke.

N.R. Norton, of Zetella, was in the city and received his commission as justice of the peace for Line Creek district, and took the oath of office from Ordinary Drewry.

Hartford Green, of Zebulon, was in the city mingling with his host of Griffin friends. Mr. Green was treasurer of Pike County and one of Zebulon’s most energetic and successful young businessmen.

L.R. Brewer left for Castlerock, Ore., where he engaged in business with Rockwell Nall, another Griffin boy, who owned a ranch out there. A most worthy young man, he had the best wishes of all his Griffin friends in his new location and business venture.

Marine Cpl. Pope Hamlet, son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Hamlet of Griffin, was serving with the First Marine Aircraft Wing at Iwakuni, Japan.

Cadet Arthur C. Blake, son of Mrs. Ruby C. Blake of Griffin, received six weeks of training at the Reserve Officer Training Corps summer camp at Fort Belvoir, Va. Blake is a 1955 graduate of McCallie Boys School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a 1959 graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology.

Marine Acting Sgt. Sam Shirley Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Shirley of Griffin, took part in amphibious landings with 1,400 Marines of the Second Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment, on Chicago’s Montrose Avene Beach and Wilwaukee’s McKinley Beach.

Navy Seaman J.W. Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Hicks of Griffin; Navy Airman Joseph C. Williamson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gurleen W. Joiner of Griffin; and Navy Seaman Jimmy Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Johnson of Griffin, were serving in the Western Pacific as a unit of the U.S. Seventh Fleet.

Lisa Corbin, Michael Ballard and David Evans of the Griffin High ROTC Department were among the students helping the Jaycees collect Empty Stocking Funds. They went house to house seeking funds to support a Jaycee toy program for needy students.

Mr. and Mrs. Bobby O. Dunn were honored with a reception at Central Lake Church of God celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. The reception was given by their daughters, Miss Lori Dunn and Miss Deneen Dunn of Griffin. Approximately 125 guests called on the couple during the afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Moses Edge observed their 31st wedding anniversary by celebrating with a number of friends and relatives.

Walt Mason of the Griffin Kiwanis Club congratulated James Todd Spradlin on being named to participate in the Georgia Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation Youth Seminar to be held in Atlanta. Spradlin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Spradlin.

Laura McDaniel, daughter of Johnie and Patricia McDaniel of Griffin, was named to the dean’s list for fall semester at Bryan College.

The Rev. and Mrs. Marion Underwood Sr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a celebration hosted by their children at the Barnesville Civic Center. Their children are Marion Jr., Rosalind, Sheila and Angela. More than 150 friends and family attended the event.

Reid Bond attained the rank of Eagle with the Boy Scouts of America. Reid is a member of Troop 14, sponsored by The Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located on Maddox Road in Griffin. Reid is the son of Bill and Sydney Bond of Pike County.

Betty Oliver of Griffin was employed as the Administrative Secretary of the Griffin Kiwanis Club.

Benjamin Eugene Brooks III of The Rock was placed on the dean’s list for the 2003 fall semester at the University of Georgia in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In April 2004, Ben was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He is the son of Sonny and Dennie Bray Brooks of The Rock, and the grandson of Gene Brooks of Griffin and Diane Bray of Griffin.

Pvt. Shawn Eady of Thomaston graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Training in Parris Island, S.C. He is the son of Wanda Eady of Thomaston, formerly of Griffin. Shawn was stationed at Camp Geiger, N.C. for basic warrior training.

Airman 1st Class Michael “David” Goldsmith, son of Mike and Nancy Bray Goldsmith of Cleveland, S.C. graduated from Tactical Air Command & Control Course at Hurlburt Field, Fla. He also completed the Combat Survival Training Course at Fairchild AFB, Wash. He is the grandson of Diane Bray of Griffin and Nancy Baldwin of Social Circle.

Frances and Charles Westmoreland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in Miami, Fla. at the home of Mrs. Westmoreland’s aunt, and relocated to Griffin from Hialeah, Fla. They planned to celebrate their anniversary with dinner and an evening out.
