From the Annals of 1909

W.T. Thomas was putting in a stairway and partitions to the second story of the building occupied by him on North Hill Street, and making other complete preparations for opening a first-class restaurant for ladies and gentlemen.

Ezra Mann, who had been with Bass Brothers Co. here for several years, went to Rome to become bookkeeper for C.C. Bass. Mr. Bass was a clever young man and during his residence in Griffin made many friends, all of whom wished him well in the Hill city.

Miss Myrtice Minter, after a few days visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Minter, returned to Milledgeville, where she resumed her studies at the Girls Normal and Industrial School.

Miss Opal Archer returned to Athens to resume her studies at the State Normal School, after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Archer.

Airman 3rd Class Larry D. Spangler arrived in London, England for a tour of duty with U.S. Air Force. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Spangler of East Point, formerly of Griffin.

Navy Seaman Recruit Peter R. Spangler was taking basic training at Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Spangler of East Point, formerly of Griffin.

Navy Radioman 3rd Class Ray W. Newnan, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Newnan of Experiment, serving aboard the destroyer USS Charles H. Roan, was scheduled to visit Deluth, Minn., as part of Operation “Inland Seas”, a vast naval exercise to celebrate the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Navy Damage Controlman 3rd Class Audrey A. Crane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Crane of Griffin and husband of the former Miss Laquita J. Barrown of Griffin, serving aboard the dock landing ship USS San Marcos, visited Milwaukee, Wis., as part of Operation “Inland Seas”, a vast naval exercise to celebrate the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Eudell Brown of Barnesville was the winner of a mini-14 rifle in a drawing at the Griffin Pawn Shop. Donations totalled $1,137. The money was raised to help the Leroy Chambers family with medical expenses. Their daughter, Debbie, had underwent a kidney transplant.

Winners in the book fair poster contest at Spalding Junior High II were Todd King, first; Celeste Perdue, second; Brenda Cole, third; Lee Brannon and Ruel McFarland, honorable mention.

Brenda Smith participated in a clinical dental workshop in Atlanta. The workshop was a part of the 125th annual session of the American Dental Association held at the World Congress Center. Ms. Smith is a dental assistant in the office of Dr. Michael Goldstein, South Eighth Street.

The Beaverbrook Elementary School was presented an Award of Excellence in School Media Centers by the State Board of Education’s Excellence Recognition Program.

Joe and Ann Smith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an openhouse for family and friends at their home. Their children are Ernest Smith and Carol, Richard Smith and Cathy and Elizabeth Smith Todd and Jerry D. Todd.

Lewis and Loria Clark Jester celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary. Their children are Henteves and Javen Jester and Nydia Johnson.

Clark Oetting of Griffin joined 243 other seniors at Florida Southern College in graduating during mid-year commencement ceremonies. The son of Joyce and Dr. Ronald Oetting, he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Marsha Dees achieved the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design for the fall quarter. Dees is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Dees of Griffin.

Taylor Magusiak placed second in the 50-yard butterfly and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle at the State Swim Meet in Marietta, Ga.

Tucker Casey Colvin earned his Eagle Scout in Troop 2, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Griffin. In two-and-a-half years he earned 31 merit badges, completed the Boy Scout Junior Leadership Training course, and became a member of Order of the Arrow and served in positions of leadership in his troop including troop guide and senior patrol leader.

Kelly Jacob of Griffin earned presidential academic honors at Valparaiso University. Jacob was a junior elementary education major. She is the daughter of Randall Jacob of Williamson and Susan Jacob of Griffin.

James Robert “Robbie” York was named to the dean’s list at the University of Georgia for the summer semester. He was a student at Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. He is the son of Tom and Jane York of Milner.
