From the Annals of 1909

Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Brawner and Miss Bertha Brawner left on an extended visit to N.Y. and other eastern cities. At Charlotte, N.C., they were joined by Mrs. C.H. Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brawner and sister of Miss Brawner.

Mr. and Mrs. Newt Powers, of Carrollton, came to Griffin to reside. Mr. Powers was with Bass Bros. Co. and was domiciled on Sixth Street, opposite the High School building.

Dr. Cook was awarded the honor of discovering the North Pole by the debating society judges in the contest held at the High School. At the close of the debate Prof. A.L. Snider was called on to give a description of the Pole, which he did in a graphic and masterly way.

Mrs. Joseph Thomas was the delightful hostess at a beautiful dinner party in honor of her house guests. The decorations of ferns, golden glow and yellow dahlias were unusually pretty and effective. The table decorations were of yellow oxalis and Marchal Nell roses with a fringe of maiden hair fern.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Voyles and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Snell attended the National Convention of the American Business Club in Charleston, W.Va. They represented the Griffin Chapter of the ABC Club.

Attending the Kiwanis International Convention, in Dallas, Texas, from Hampton were Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Olan Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. Arliss Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sims.

Miss Aletha Yvonne Vickery, who graduated from Griffin High School in June, was accepted for admission in September at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Vickery of Griffin.

Miss Yvonne Vickery and Ellis Gaddy, both graduates of Griffin High School, were presented $500 scholarships from the Yaarab Temple in Atlanta.

Mary Jane Williamson, of Griffin, was the youngest actress on the stage and Mrs. Nell Walker, of Concord, the oldest when the Gordon College Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol” opened Nov. 27.

Christopher Todd Jimmerson and Christian Lee Jimmerson, were presented Eagle Scout badges at the First Baptist Church. They are the twin sons of Ron and Carol Jimmerson of Griffin and are members of Troop Two which the First Baptist Church sponsors.

Marine Pfc. Curtis E. Driver, son of Curtis and Sarah Driver of Griffin, completed recruit training at Parriss Island, S.C. Driver is a 1984 graduate of Griffin High School.

Marine Sgt. Danny W. Lowry, son of Marcea Garrison and Coole Lane of McDonough, was awarded the U.S. Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

Doug Hollberg, Kiwanis Club president, presented a $500 check for the Griffin High School JROTC to Cadet Capt. Mark Tatum and retired Lt. Col. Curtis Jones.

Jason Driscal (Bud) Huggins and Barbara Howard Huggins celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. Their children are son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Judy Huggins; and daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Ronnie Goins. Mr. and Mrs. Jason Huggins celebrated their anniversary with family and friends.

C.M. Turner Sr. and Hattie Ballard Turner of Williamson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a festive luncheon at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Rick Wolin of McDonough. Their other children are Wendell Turner of Riverdale, Mirch and Etta Turner Jr., Norman and Yvonne Turner and Alton and Sara Beth Turner, all of Williamson.

Deborah Lockett Barkley and Charlie Barkley celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary with a nice evening alone. Their children are Kawasika, Twan and Charlie Jr. The couple were married in Spalding County.

Kenneth and Charlotte Peeples celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Kenneth Jr., Christy and Tony Maddox. The couple celebrated with a renewing of vows at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Bobby and Jeanette Huff celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Charles Keith Huff and Tony and Rhonda Ivie, all of Williamson. The couple celebrated with an anniversary party given in their honor with friends and family.

Monica and Sarah Gay celebrated their 6th anniversary. They are the parents of Gregory and Nedra Westmoreland, Octavia Gay, and Gatchel Westmoreland. The couple were married at Eighth Street Baptist Church with the Rev. James officiating. The couple celebrated with a quiet dinner and a trip to Dayton, Fla.
