From the Annals of 1909

As the finger of time moved forward and rested upon the hour of 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon, every wheel and cog in the system of the Central of Georgia railroad came to a standstill and remained so for 60 seconds, in deference to the memory of Edward H. Harriman, who was then being laid to his final sleep on a quiet hillside far away in New York.

A new electric pump, the capacity of which was 350 gallons per minute, was purchased for the waterworks plant, to take the place of the pump bought the prior December and which had never given satisfaction.

Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Emerson returned from an extended trip to Seattle, Denver and other cities in the West. Mr. Emerson was shown over Denver by James M. Burpee, a former Griffin boy, whose friends here were pleased to know that he was making good out there.

W.M. Middlebrooks, of Cleburne County, Ala., a former resident of this section, was spending a few days with relatives and friends in Griffin and vicinity. This was his first visit here in many years.

Navy Radioman 3rd Class Ray W. Newman, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Newman of Experiment, was serving aboard the destroyer USS Charles H. Roan. He was participating in “Operation Inland Seas,” a cruise of 28 U.S. Navy warships to cities in the Great Lakes during the summer.

William L. Gentry, son of Mrs. Etta Gentry of Griffin, graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.

Army Pvt. Troy E. Evans Jr., whose parents lived in Griffin, was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany. He completed basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga. Evans attended Griffin High School.

John M. Meeks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy W. Meeks of Griffin, completed recruit training at the Marine Corp. Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

From the Annals of 1984

Pfc. Andre Wilkerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Guider of Griffin, graduated from basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J.

Army National Guard Pfc. Michael J. Davis, son of Patricia E. and James H. Davis of Griffin, completed a unit and organization supply specialist course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Ft. Lee, Va. He is a 1984 graduate of Griffin High School.

Airman 1st Class Jerry W. Collier, son of Marian Collier of Griffin, and Gerald Collier of Griffin, graduated from the U.S. Air Force law enforcement specialist course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1983 graduate of Griffin High School.

Capt. Raymond T. Ray Jr., son of Raymond T. and Grace B. Ray of Griffin, graduated from the U.S. Army engineer officer advanced course at Ft. Belvoir, Va. He is a 1980 graduate of North Georgia College, Dahlonega.

Larry and Jearline Reeves Palmore celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary. Their four children are Sheila and Roosevelt Byas of Gadsden, Ala., and O.J. and Cassandra Parks, David Palmore and Elizabeth Palmore, all of Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Palmore were married at the home of Harry and Ada Cheeves.

Millard Frank Forsyth English and Sarah Akins English of Zebulon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hilton Head, S.C., given to them by daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Dianne English Wagner and Thomas Matthew Wagner of Douglasville. The couple’s other daughter is Linda Brown of Brunswick.

Navy Airman Angelito B. Ong, son of Danny and Marie Gunter of Barnesville, spent the holidays forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk.

Navy Seaman Jan J. Phillip, a 1993 graduate of Jackson High School, was on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the destroyer USS Spruance, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

Melvin and Elizabeth Brooks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Angie and Jim Woodall of Williamson and Jennifer and Dana Gilow of Zebulon. The couple celebrated with a trip to Florida along with their children and grandchildren and also had a family dinner in their honor.

First National Bank President Chuck Copeland presented a $1,000 check to Bob Schmutzler, Griffin Area Concert Association board member. The check was for the Griffin Area Concert Association 2004 to 2005 concert season.

Skipper Burns, President of the Rotary Club of Griffin, was among the thousands attending Rotary’s largest international convention held at The Osaka International Convention Center in Japan.

Don Crider, Kiwanis of Griffin chairman of the Major Emphasis Committee and District Director for the Boy Scouts of America Flint River Council, presented a plaque to Kiwanis of Griffin. The plaque was for sponsoring the 2004 Spring Camporee honoring Ronnie Massey, a longtime Kiwanis of Griffin member.
