From the Annals of 1909

Harry Barron, formerly of Spalding County, who had been living in Albany for several years past, returned to Griffin and accepted a position here. He was welcomed back by his friends.

George Hanson gave a barbecue to his old friends and neighbors at Vega down in Pike, which was attended by a couple hundred people.

Miss Kate Mills returned to Baxley, Ga., to resume her duties as music teacher in the school at that place, after spending the summer vacation at her home in this city.

C.A. Crocker, of south Georgia, was spending a few days with relatives and friends in this section. Mr. Crocker had moved from Sunny Side a year prior to south Georgia, where he was farming, and his friends were pleased to know of his splendid success down there.

Miss Mary Elizabeth Dawson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Dawson of Zebulon, was presented the Lions Club Cup for “Best All Around Student” at Pike County High School. Miss Dawson was salutatorian of her class.

U.S. Air Force Sgt. Leon Nolan, stationed in the Philippines for 15 months, was spending a leave in Griffin with his wife and family.

Miss Sudy Vance and Miss Lynn Oliff, students at Griffin High School, left to attend Girl’s State at Mercer University in Macon. They were sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. The two girls were chosen because of their high scholastic record.

Miss Elizabeth Williams of Griffin won third place in a Fashion Show and Talent Show which was the highlight of the first week of activities at the Jennie Arnold Edwards Camp in Athens. Prizes were awarded to the girls who created and wore the most original costumes in the Fashion Show. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Williams Jr., of Griffin.

Helen Grayson of Solomon Street Sports presented two tickets to the Michael Jackson concert in Atlanta to Vickie Randall. She won them in a promotional event the store sponsored.

Kirk D. Blackmon, Blackmon Enterprises, was awarded the state sales volume award for more than $300,000 worth of Certainteed solid vinyl siding.

Karen Martin of Griffin, who was an employee of the Chick-fil-A corporate office in Atlanta, was awarded a $2,500 per year scholarship to Berry College at Rome, Ga. She is the daughter of Jarry and Sue Martin of Griffin.

President Bob Smith and Treasurer Ed Scudder of the American Business Club, Griffin Chapter, accepted a $1,400 check from Ken Ford of the Griffin Kiwanis Club. ABC members and their wives worked at the Spalding Fair and the check was the club’s share. The money was to be used for ABC community service work.

Taylor Street Middle School named Barbara King as the Golden Gryphon Teacher for the month of November. King is an eighth-grade science teacher who is a Griffin native and had taught in the Griffin-Spalding County system for five years. The award represents excellence as an educator.

The Rev. and Mrs. Claude A. Franklin celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Their children are Nicole Favor and Claudarius Franklin. The couple were married at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Titus Roberson.

Jim Hall and Virginia Thompson Hall of Griffin celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. They have three sons, Jim Jr., Steve and Eddie, two daughters-in-law, all of Columbus. The couple were married in the Oak Grove Congregational Christian Church in Troup County by the Rev. Melvin Dollar.

Calvin and Octeria Odom celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary with an evening out wining and dining. They have two children, Rashad Odom and Latasha Odom. The couple were married at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. Horace Fuller Jr.

Don Crider, Kiwanis of Griffin, chair of the Major Emphasis Committee, presented two checks to Chris Briggs of the Crossroads Program. The $500 check was to be put in the library fund and the $250 check was to be used for field day activities.

Shundra Barkley signed her letter of intent to play college softball at Brown Mackie. Present at the signing with her were her mother, Trina Freeman; brother, Derrius Tyler; and Spalding basketball coach Jared Griffis.

The U.S. Achievement Academy announced that Bess Fowler of Griffin had been named an All-American Scholar. Bess attended Spalding County High School and was nominated for the national award by Todd Benz. She is the daughter of Hal and Nina Fowler of Griffin.

Jimmy and Shirley Coleman celebrated their 25th anniversary. They are the parents of Linda Kerr. The couple were married in Hampton.
