From the Annals of 1909

Mrs. Edward Wilson, of Savannah, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Huff. Mrs. Wilson left after a few days to join her daughter, Miss Elizabeth Wilson, in Chicago.

Miss Unie Green returned home from Portland, Ore., where she spent several weeks with her brother, Jack Moore, and family.

Rev. A.C. Smith attended the annual reunion of the survivors of the Thirtieth Georgia regiment at Douglasville. He reported a fine reunion and a most enjoyable time.

Mrs. E.A. Ware and children, Patti, Mae, Beverly, Walter, Francis and Helen, went to Rome, Ga. where they spent a month with Mrs. W.A. Wood, the mother of Mrs. Ware.

Marla Maddox, student at Emory-at-Oxford, was named to the Merit List for spring quarter. Marla is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Maddox of Griffin.

Rebecca Ann Bethune of Experiment was one of 64 students named to the dean’s list at the end of the spring quarter at Mercer University in Macon.

William Paul Callahan of Barnesville received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Georgia State College of Business Administration.

Seven Griffinites were awarded degrees at graduation exercises at Georgia Tech in June. They were Joseph D. Phillips, Arthur C. Blake, Frank Harris Jr., Richard E. Mauney, Tommy G. Hollis, Charles M. Lewis and Augustus C. Rogers Jr.

Stanley R. Barrett, son of George and Earnestine R. Barrett of Barnesville, was promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of first lieutenant. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Georgia.

Spc. 4 James L. McCleary Jr., son of Harrie L. and James L. McCleary, both of Fayetteville, N.C., re-enlisted in the U.S. Army in Grafenwoehr, West Germany after more than two years of military service. His wife Jewell is the daughter of Willie G. Crenshaw of Barnesville.

Army Sgt. Sandra L. Holder, daughter of Charles E. and Valmer J. Moore, was involved in a NATO-sponsored exercise by participating in the Army’s return of forces to Germany and the Air Force’s Crested Cap exercises. Her husband, Warren, is the son of Flora J. Holder of Milner.

Airman James M. Toney Jr., son of Evelyn Ingram of Griffin and J.M. Toney Sr. of Forest Park, graduated from the integrated avionics computerized test station and component course at Lowry Air Force Base, Ohio.

Amber Eubanks won first place and best in the seventh-eighth grade youth category for painting at the Georgia National Fair in Perry. Amber was a seventh-grader at Taylor Street Middle School. She is the daughter of Richard and Rhonda Eubanks.

Frank and Jan Harris of Orchard Hill participated in “America’s Largest Block Party” on the Mississippi gulf coast with their 1958 customized Edsel Pacer. They were among more than 2,500 car enthusiasts from all over the country to participate.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4092 honored Boy Scout Patrick Hicks for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. The grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Gaddy of Griffin received a plaque and VFW achievement medal.

DeAnn Whalen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Whalen III of Griffin, was inducted into Belmont University’s chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for college freshmen. She was a commercial music major at Belmont.

Kelly Leger, Senior Adult Center supervisor, presented Frances Leach, president of the Walking Club of Spalding County, the Volunteer of the Year 2004 award during the Senior Olympics in April.

Dorothy Hall was chosen as the “best mom” in The Belk America’s Best Mom Sweepstakes during May. The mother was judged from an essay written about her by her daughter, Beth, and a submitted photograph. She won a $25 Belk Great Gifts Card.

June and Walter McKemie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated with dinner at Milano’s with family and friends. The couple were married in Seattle, Wash.

Gil and Cathy Slegl celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Michael and Jenna. Mr. and Mrs. Slegl were married in Denver, Colo. The couple planned to celebrate with a trip to Fredericksburg, Va.
