From the Annals of 1909

W. Lee Almon of Rushton, La., was spending a few days with relatives and friends in Griffin. Mrs. Almon had been here for some time as the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Thornton. Mr. Almon was a former Griffinite, who was “making good” in the Creole State, where he had a lucrative position and was forging to the front in the business world.

A large number of citizens of East Griffin were anxious to have East Chapel Street extended to a point out near Mr. Heartshorne’s farm. They presented a petition to the city council. Quite a number new residences had been erected out that way including a whole row of neat cottages built by James E. Emerson.

Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Key, formerly of this section, were spending a week in the city as the guests of their daughter, Mrs. W.P. Horne on West Taylor Street. Mr. Key, who was “one of the boys” when Jim Logan was ordinary, says he used to know every man in Spalding Co., but now he meets few familiar faces.

Joseph N. Banks, of Inman, who probably had the largest family of any man in Fayette County, gave a family reunion with a barbecue dinner. There were 14 of his 15 children present and a large number of grandchildren. The entire crowd numbered over 100.

Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Cook and daughter, Darlene, attended the Georgia Chiropractic Association Convention held in Savannah.

Jerry Stripling, member of the sales staff of Hill’s Tire Store in Griffin, attended the annual Goodyear Merchandise Fair at the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta.

Miss Mathilde Brown, of Griffin, was honored on the “It Could Be You” television show when emcee Bill Leyden announced that in appreciation for the 38 years of service as a school teacher in Griffin, “It Could Be You” was sending her a new gas range as a gift in recognition of her recent retirement.

Miss June Connally of Newnan, formerly of Griffin, was an honor graduate at Agnes Scott College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Connally Jr. of Newnan and granddaughter of Mrs. Glenn Connally Sr. of Milner.

Jess W. Stewart, son of Inez D. Stewart of Griffin, was promoted in the U.S. Air Force to senior airman. He was an aircraft maintenance specialist at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.

Seaman Lawrence R. Delisle II, son of Barbara A. Sommeis of Stockbridge, completed recruit training at the Naval Academy Center, San Diego, Calif.

Marine Sgt. Walter L. Head, son of Betty E. Head of Griffin, reported for duty with the Third Force Service Support Group on Okinawa.

Pfc. Jeffery S. Gatlin Jr., son of Brenda D. and Jeffery S. Gatlin of Griffin, completed Marine Aviation Supply training at the Naval Air Station, Meridian, Miss.

Mr. and Mrs. Doug Landers celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Sarah Landers and Steven Landers. Mr. and Mrs. Landers were married by Johnny Clements.

Ray and Carolyn Bunn of Griffin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A reception was held in their honor at the Church of Christ in Griffin. They have five sons, Albert and Cathy, Ricky and Vicky, Jimmy and Cathy, Michael and Wanda, all of Griffin, and Tim and Regina of Conyers.

Lewis Murphy was honored as the oldest Eagle Scout in the Griffin Kiwanis Club. He had been a member of the Kiwanis Club since 1942 and received his ranking of Eagle Scout in 1930. Frank Lindsey, also of Griffin, also received his Eagle rank on the same night.

Kiwanis Club President Tommie Lee presented a $3,020 check to Jack Sears, executive of the Flint River Council of Boy Scouts. The check was to be used to sponsor the handicapped in all of the boy scout units in Spalding County.

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) held the state convention in Atlanta. Jimmy Coleman and his wife Shirley, Joyce Priest and Lon and Al Gillespie represented the Griffin Chapter at the banquet.

Griffin Christian Academy’s 4-H Clover Kids received an award of Club of the Year.

Bennie “Peter” and Linda Cook celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of eight wonderful children. The couple planned to celebrate with a seven-day cruise to Jamaica, Ocho Rios and the Cayman Islands.

Andrea Lyn McGavin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McGavin of Griffin, received a bachelor of arts degree cum laude with a major in Spanish from Presbyterian College.
