Mrs. Joseph Thomas entertained with an al fresco concert at her home on the corner of Eighth and Poplar Streets. The colonnade of the handsome colonial home was effectively decorated with Japanese parasols and fans of different sizes and with palms and ferns placed here and there. Japanese lanterns were suspended from the magnolia and cedar trees at the side of the lawn and the moon shed its silvery light upon the pretty scene.
The young men gave a delightful dance at the Commercial Club in honor of the many charming visitors in the city. Twelve couples were present, the chaperones being Mrs. Will Searcy Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Wilson.
Miss Shatteen Mitchell, who had been the guest of Mrs. H.W. McWilliams for a few days, was signally honored by being made the free and unanimous choice of the Baptist chautauqua at Blue Ridge to give lessons in vocal expression. Miss Mitchell, a former Griffinite, had many friends here, who had followed her successful career with much interest.
Col. Julian Willingham, of Forsyth, opened a law office in Jackson in connection with his father, Hon. B.S. Willingham.

Judge and Mrs. George Imes Jr. attended graduation exercises at Mercer University in Macon. Their son, Allen Imes, received his diploma at the exercises.
Girl Scout Troop 101, Third Ward School, completed its first year of intermediate scouting by enjoying a hike and cook-out at the Grogan Farm at Orchard Hill.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Thomas left for N.Y. to attend the International Rotary Convention. Mr. Brown was president of the local club.
Miss Frances Bevil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bevil, graduated from Middle Georgia College. Miss Bevil was editor of the college newspaper, president of Delta Psi Omega, president of Talmadge Hall Council and a member of the student council and choir.

Pfc. Samuel F. Driver, son of Loretta B. and Glover S. Driver of Griffin, arrived for duty at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Army Pvt. Don E. Blanton, son of Maxie and Thomas J. Blanton of Griffin, arrived for duty at Friedberg, West Germany. He was a supply specialist with the Service Battery and previously was assigned at Ft. Jackson, S.C.
National Guard Pvt. John D. Culpepper, son of John C. and Ann J. Culpepper of Griffin, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jason K. Donham, son of Gary and Mary Donham of Jackson, returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the fast attack submarine USS Albuquerque. Donham is a 1991 graduate of Henry County High School.
Navy Fireman Kenya Whitehead, daughter of Annie Whithead of Griffin, was deployed to LaMaddelena, Italy, while assigned to the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land. Whitehead is a 1998 graduate of Griffin High School.
Navy Airman Angelito B. Ong, son of Danny and Marie Gunter of Barnesville, was deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk.
Navy Airman Dennis P. Worsham, whose wife Karen is the daughter of Fred and June Lewis of Griffin, visited Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, while on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, homeported in San Diego. Worsham is a 1994 graduate of Lamar County High School.

Griffin resident William Thielemann was honored with the 2004 Jules W. Lindau Award for outstanding achievement and contributions to the Southern Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Griffin senior Willie Ponder signed his letter of intent to play football at Dean College. Present at the signing were his mother, Dorothy Troutman, along with Griffin head coach Steve DeVoursney and Griffin High assistant principal Quimby Melton III.
Anna Daniel, a Spalding High School senior received the DeKalb Agricultural Award which is sponsored by Monsanto Co. to each school’s graduating senior who exhibits excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work.
Sapien member Frank Chambliss cheered on Beaverbrook Elementary School principal Ken Boseman, second-grader Josh Deeds and first-grader Juanita Starks as they played an Australian instrument, the didgeridoo. Sapien, a musical group, visited the school to show the students new and interesting instruments.
