From the Annals of 1909

Chief of Police Phelps left for Buffalo, N.Y. to attend the annual meeting of the national association of chiefs of police, of which he had long been a member. He also planned to take in Niagra Falls, Toronto, Canada, and other points of interest on the trip.

Rev. W.Z. Gardner, of Orchard Hill, returned from an extended visit to Mississippi, Texas and other places in the West. He was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. G.G. Graham, of Eddy, Texas, who was spending time in this section with relatives.

Mrs. W.C. Beeks left for a two weeks visit to Mrs. J.S. Boynton’s elegant summer home at High Shoals in Walton County.

Miss Laura Jones entertained at a beautiful birthday party at her home on North 5th St. After the games, delicious refreshments were served by Misses Hazel Bassett, Effie Bassett, Ruby Fulghum and Martha Jones.

A first solo flight was made by Naval Aviation Cadet Stanley J. Jays, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy W. Hayes of Griffin. He attended Georgia State College. In addition to solo flights, he was being instructed in Communications, Navigation, Engineering, Athletics, Aerology and Civil Air regulations during basic flight training at Pensacola, Fla.

Howard Olson, honor student and member of the Griffin High School graduating class was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and financial aid by the Princeton University, which was renewable annually. He is the son of Mrs. L.C. Olson and the late Dr. Olson of the Georgia Experiment Station.

Gayle Goodin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Goodin of Griffin, who graduated from Troy State College, Troy, Ala., accepted a position with the DeKalb County Educational System in Decatur.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bunn, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gaissert Jr., Billy Shapard, Howard Wallace, Dick Walters and Glenn Martin were among Griffinites who attended the State Jr. Chamber of Commerce meeting in Augusta.

The Flying Fezzes were represented in the annual Shrine parade in Griffin. The Fezzes volunteer to fly burn victims to Shrine treatment centers. This is a special charity work. Thousands of people attended the parade.

Three Griffin area men, Paul H. Carter of Griffin, R.T. Boyle of Barnesville, and B.R. James of Jackson, were among 33 graduates of the 59th Georgia State Patrol Training School. Troopers Carter and James were assigned to the Griffin post and Trooper Boyle was assigned to the Metro Atlanta post.

Lloyd Johnson Matthews, of Griffin, received an A.B. degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta with a major in English and a minor in chemistry. He is the son of Mrs. Anne Johnson Nunnally of Griffin. He also is the son of Col. Lloyd J. Matthews, U.S. Army (ret.) of Clinton, Okla. He planned to study law at the University of Georgia.

Tonya L. Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas R. Taylor of Griffin, was named to the dean’s list for summer quarter at the Medical College of Georgia. She was an occupational therapy major.

Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education Chairperson Debbie Hudson and Spalding County Commission Chairman Earle Childres spoke to first graders at Atkinson Elementary School as part of Civics Day activities.

Lucille and Durward Williams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children honored them with a reception held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The couple were married at Webster Avenue Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fla.

Troy John McDaniel and Jessica Kelly McDaniel celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel have a daughter, Elizabeth Matison McDaniel. The couple were married at Orchard Hill Baptist Church.

The Rev. Jimmy D. and Lettie Daniel celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with family. They are the parents of Jimmy Antwon, Dale Antoinette, David Anthony, and Virgus Antonio Daniel. The Rev. and Mrs. Daniel were married by the Rev. E.P. Pyron.

Mr. and Mrs. William Hillhouse celebrated their first anniversary. The couple were married at Kincaid United Methodist Church by Rev. Pat Looper. Mr. Hillhouse is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Lummus of Barnesville. Mrs. Hillhouse is the daughter of Martha Cobb and the late Otis Cobb.

Freddy and Linda Bostwick celebrated their 19th anniversary. They are the parents of Jamie Bostwick and Mandy and Robert Hinkley. The couple were married at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Students at Orrs Elementary grew green thumbs with the help of a generous donation of begonias from Plant Emporium. Parent volunteer Joanna Johnson assisted Cody Johnson, Alexis Hammond and Cristian Duran, kindergarten students in Sally Brake’s class, as they made a comfy home for their plants.

Anne St. Elementary students Michael Johnson and Vincent Blackmon shared a laugh as they quizzed each other before taking Accelerated Reader tests.
